Still in talks for the rights (I thought anyone could make warhammer property going by all the shitty games >_>) They supposedly have Cavill on to act/produce and he supposedly has been a Warhammer fan since he was a kid.

I'm just getting into this universe, are there any games that feature the God-Emperor prior to being confined to the golden throne? I can only find the horus heresy series which is like.... fifty fucking books, so a TV series adapting that would be pretty sick for lazy newcomers like myself.

Amazon is making an adaptation of a deeply loved franchise with deep lore and Henry Cavill, who is a huge fan, is going to play a leading role?

Not even made yet and that bitch is throwing death flags like a near-retirement police officer talking about his grandchild.

I hope it's good and people like it

But I gotta confess I don't really "get" Warhammer 40k.

"There's only war! Just anger and fighting! Factions whose members aren't there by idealogy but merely due to where they were born dedicate their lives to wiping each other out in an endless conflict that cannot ever resolve."

Well that's just boring.

You can't fight and be angry all the time. At some point you gotta go take a break, paint the house, go swiming with the kids, meet a nice lady.

Constant anger and war is just as boring as staring a blank wall if that's all that ever happens in the world. It's impossible to get invested.

I mean can you imagine a character in 40K whose job is that they make sandwiches and then deliver the sandwiches to the soldiers? And then they go home and read a book?

If the answer is no, then your fantasy world sucks.

I can imagine that in LOTR, I can imagine that in Mass Effect, I can imagine that in Star Trek or Babylon Five or Signalis.

Sort of similar to how I can't really get immersed in Dark Souls. If the "cycle of nothing but entropy and death" is eternal then nothing anyone does matters.

Unfair saying he doesn't understand the appeal of a series that revolves around an eternal conflict wherein people bicker and fight over ultimately pointless trivialities is such an amazing lack of self-awareness that I imagine he's forgotten where his physical body actually is.

Since you're just getting into the universe you might find this Youtube channel interesting.

https://m.youtube.com/@Luetin09

He has tons of 40k lore videos. He's very thorough and detailed, bordering on pedantic sometimes, which I happened to appreciate.

For context, both Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy weren't originally meant to be a deep universe. They started out as tabletop War games. The main product of Warhammer is a game where you collect plastic figures to represent armies on a battlefield

I understand that 40k is not for everyone. It's not a happy place. The only race that I think is happy is the Orks. They are having the time of their lives

Actually I do think it could be interesting to have a show focused on normal people in 40k. The downtrodden 99% of the universe just trying to survive each day while insane battles happen around them

I dunno if this is addressing me or just vague people.

But if it was directed at me, I want to note that the problem for me isn't that "Warhammer isn't happy" very few Sci-Fi future universes are happy. Maybe Star Trek.

It's just that if your whole universe is just one constant thing with no vareity than it's boring.

Painting naked ladies while hanging upsidedown from a wire surrounded by fire is exicting.

A whole universe where absolutely nothing happens except painting naked ladies while hanging upsidedown from a wire surrounded by fire would be so mind numbingly boring that I probably couldn't finish episode 2.

It's like the Twilight Zone Episode where hell is being trapped in a Casino where you always win. There's gotta be some vareity. You have to stop and do something else at some point.

What's a character from 40ks favorite cheese? Do they sing songs? Do their kids go to school?

What would happen if 5 dudes from the same faction got stuck on an island? There was no one to fight and no way home, what would they do?

That's how you make immersion. Even the Zombies in RE4 are shown playing darts and feeding the chickens.

The point with Warhammer 40K is to make it grimdark as fuck and then turn the dial to 11.
If you take a break to paint a house, you are seen as a heretic. That means that they will send a unit of big spaceships to destroy you, your family, your military unit and the whole planet just to be sure.
Yes, it exist "normal peasants" that lives in fear for having their planet being destroyed if somebody believes they are heretics.
...and there are planets that are too far away from the Empire to have regular visits so it is seen as old legends, but they mostly ends up being invaded by other factions, and the population either ends up in hell or being converted into enemy units.

That's not a very interesting universe.

Don't get me wrong, if you like it that's great. I'm not trying to put down 40k fans and I hope you enjoy the show.

I just don't get it. I don't get how you can get drama and characters and investment in that.

Wikis are great. But I tend to get distracted. Try to read about one thing, start opening a bunch of other articles in the background, each of those leads to more. Two hours later and I still haven't finished the thing I was there for. The videos work best for me. I could listen to them while driving around all night for work. No hyperlinks to distract me. Lol

I mean after 35 years of lore and hundreds of books and characters there's likely to be something in the 40k universe that would be interesting.

The themes of eternal war, suffering, and humanity on the brink of extinction are very important to the setting obviously. Everything always links back to that in some way. Not everyone would find that type of universe appealing, and that's understandable. But there's a lot of interesting things below the surface in my opinion. The culture and organization of the Astartes (Space Marines) is the quickest example I could think of. And there's more of course.

As I said everything does have to link up to the idea that it's a grimdark universe. But I don't think that's a detriment to the setting. It's just the background everything else is built off of.

there is literally something for everyone in warhammer. pretty sure across both franchises there's somewhere around 500 novels at this point, in virtually every genre besides idk, romance maybe. dozens of factions with hundreds of sub factions, etc.

and the reason warhammer has so many shitty games is bc they turned down the first game developer that asked for the warhammer license, and that's how we got warcraft. so now GW just whores the IP out to basically anyone willing to pay for it, bc they're not making that mistake again

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2022/12/16/warhammer-starring-henry-cavill/

confirmed. Small screen AND big screen :o

Games Workshop and Amazon Studios are working together to bring the Warhammer 40,000 universe to screens, big and small alike*.
And theres more! One of Warhammers most famous superfans, Henry Cavill (well-known for pointing out chandeliers that look like Blackstone Fortresses) is on board, too. Hes bringing his lore expertise to the mantle of Executive Producer, and his sword arm to the starring role.

I trust that Henry Cavill wouldn't willingly involve himself in more projects that shit on his interests at this point. If it was simply announced that Amazon got 40k rights, I'd be skeptical. That Cavill is said to be involved with production does a lot to alleviate that.

As far as what the story should be, the Horus Hersey is obviously tailor made to be adapted into a movie or TV series. But it's also missing a lot of important 40k themes. Xenos are hardly involved for example. And it's largely a story about the Primarchs and the Space Marines. So it would certainly be cool if they did do that. But maybe they should adapt a story closer to present day 40k.

Watching Cavill play out Inquisitor Eisenhorn's career from a young fresh faced puritan Inquisitor into a man who embraces increasingly radical solutions to fight the dangers of Chaos would be ideal imo

If I was going to recommend a starting point to get a friend into 40k, I'd almost always start with Eisenhorn. The themes are bare 40k without requiring huge background knowledge of the setting because it introduces them well.
