...that when you find Thor in that bar and Thrud gives him shit, I had kind of an out of body experience where I thought, "This is a story about a daughter emotionally pleading against her father's alcoholism in a game series that once opened with a QTE of you fucking two women on a boat."

I really enjoyed it overall but man the last 10 percent or so of the game left such a bad taste in my mouth, was not expecting it to be a duology, ragnarok to be so underwhelming and the prophecy to end up being *shrug* guess we averted it.

There are specific reasons the prophecy was averted, though

That's not what really happened though. It's like the Norns said: there's no fate, people are just predictable because they don't change. Kratos changed, so the prophecy did too.

The alternative interpretation is that the prophecy was fulfilled exactly, the Giants just misinterpreted it. They saw a big god of war with a spear, they thought it was Tyr. They saw Loki holding a dying man with a beard, they thought it was his father, but it was Odin.

I think it was overall pretty self-aware about that.

Thor is in a really similar mindset Kratos was during the original games. Sick of everything and over it. Destructive to everyone around him. Fighting just for the thrill of it.

Odin even kills him in a very similar way Zeus kills Kratos. A shame he can't crawl from the underworld to get vengeance.

The best way to look at it is that Kratos is technically a villain in the original Trilogy. Justifiably angry at the Gods, but also did a lot of shit to innocent people as well. It was also at a time when being edgy was cool, not many games at the time had you play someone like Kratos, which was the novelty. Of course, that gimmick can only go on for so long. With the fact that Ascension did so poorly, it was clear if they wanted to continue the GoW series, they needed to take it to a different direction. Glad they went with this direction with GoW 2018.

I'm fine with the ending, but yeah I hate how "Ragnarok" is personified in both MCU and this game as some fire dude with a big sword. Like no it isn't, it's suppose to be an event.

I hate that alternate interpretation. The dying man was clearly Kratos, he had the red tattoo.

Oh, I understand the parallels with Kratos. It's the fact that the alcoholism is treated very realistically that kinda pulled me out of it.

Kratos choosing not to kill Thor is what changed the prophecy. If he decided to kill Thor, the prophecy would have come true. The Norns said there is no prophecy, it's just that people are predictable. "Kratos kills gods," so his predictable actions were going to lead to his death.

Kratos didn't kill Thor, so the prophecy didn't come true.

I'm guessing if Kratos had killed Thor, it would have given Odin, Sif, and Thrud even more motivation to kill Kratos since Kratos and Loki already killed Modi and Magni.

Yeah but the straightforward prophecy makes a way cooler story that had me expecting adult Loki kicking ass and taking names in the third one. It's another way that the world of Ragnarok felt way less bleak than the first game's world which seemed dark and miserable.

Also for being Loki he sure doesn't really trick anybody.

The game is still fresh so I haven't soaked in much of the discussion yet.

When there was the prophecy of Atreus serving Odin was that prediction out of order? It seemed to imply that would happen after the death of Kratos. Although I don't know why Atreus would do that. I guess maybe the mask would have corrupted him. Which I suppose could potentially be a loose end of sorts if that does indeed have the limitless knowledge that Odin expected.

Faye also clearly had her own prophecy that will likely end up being the completely valid one. There's an implication that she exiled herself to change that original prophecy as well right? At the very least her one outright contradicts the one where Kratos dies.

Isn't Ragnarok the last God of War game that will cover Norse mythology?

That's the two games' shtick of a lot of Norse mythology being bullshit Aesir propaganda. Some of the Aesir call him trickster just because he's there to spy on them.

And yeah, I personally don't agree with the idea that the prophecy was fulfilled just misinterpreted. I think the Norns lay out the idea of the game's theme pretty firmly. Kratos, Atreus, and maybe even Freya change their fate by making choices that they normally would not have. Kratos chooses not to kill Thor, Atreus chooses not to wear the mask, Freya chooses not to kill Odin.

It was also stated that changing their actions and decisions still lead to the same outcome. Thor still died.

While I think it's plausible that that stuff was meant to just be a red herring, it also could be evidence that this was originally meant to be a trilogy.

I think it was planned to be a duology quite early on.

But they've left a few loose ends for sure which could branch off into their own thing. The mask being one of them. I've been thinking Sony might try to branch outside of Kratos with different God of x games.

If it is never followed up on my head canon is that is the mask that is eventually found by Stanley Ipkiss.

Like every other Sony game these days. It's a completely good, above average game that's alot of fun (I'm even on my second playthrough on GmGoW)
But it's overrated. There's alot of issues to the story being shit and having the depth of a puddle, bad pacing (one atreus section in particular), weird balancing with certain enemies and camera issues.
The game also does this old outdated thing of forcing you through tunnels, or an automated climbing section to mask loading screens or spill out exposition and dialogue. Part me believes this is the fault of the PS4 version. Regardless I wish this design would die off now.
