It sure seems that way with all careers

Only jobs I can think of that you can get without knowing people are jobs that nobody wants

Yes. Especially if you don't have the required minimum degree

Eh... I don't know. Having connections is a huge advantage, obviously, but saying it's required for most decent jobs is probably overstating things a bit.

And who are you, my little friend? Not a spoon... not a fork... but something in between. A fpoon. What will you think of next, Germany?

No. A decent resume and a handful of good references from previous co-workers and managers opens plenty of doors.

It highly depends on your friend and how much they need people

You would be surprised how many people I worked with who had great resumes in their fields that ended up working for pennies at the airport because they couldn't find anything else since they knew no one

No, but I would argue there are decent jobs that a lot of people just dont want to do.

If youre following the crowd youre also going to be competing with the crowd. So in instances like that, yeah, connections are gonna be valuable.

In my field, yes. There are many jobs we have that don't even get posted. It was how I was able to get a high paying job straight out of college, because I got lucky and the person I went out of my way to talk to at a "leadership conference" happened to be a CEO of a CPA firm. I still had to go through a rigorous interview process, but I wouldn't even had that opportunity if I didn't reach out.

Absolutely

This is exactly why I dont understand why people tell you find a job when its not even easy at all to find a decent one.

The only work I can think of thats easy to get is an Uber driver gig because they hire anyone off the street

Considering every job I try to apply on via LinkedIn at this point has at least 150-200 applicants, Im gonna say yes.

I got hired at my current company without ever even doing a job application. I don't even know what the application looks like or if they actually have them. My gf is friends with the recruiter, and the recruiter said she really needs to find someone in IT. So my gf said how about me.

Every job I've ever held I got through knowing people that already worked at place of employment and put in a good word for me. Every single one.

Out of the 5 jobs Ive had through life, only one (2nd out of high school) was one where I got in with no connections or help from recruiters.

3 were referrals, and 1 was via a recruiter.

You just need the skills that would lend themselves to creating connections, not the connections themselves.

People overestimate how much society is gonna put up with antisocial nutsos.

I got to 6 figures without any connections but after I made them it made it easier to find jobs if I wanted to leave and get some pay bumps in between. My last 2 out of 3 jobs have been thanks to connections who referred me. But I didnt need them to get started.

^I had one of those kind of jobs plenty of times. They're all dead end jobs.

The chances of you building any ladder with people you work with there is very low unless you want another dead end job that pays the same.

Not in my situation. Current job, their recruiter reached out to me, and I was hired after a couple interviews. Knowing people definitely helps, but it's not a requirement.

To get my first real job involved me standing outside a Boeing location with a sign on a stick and resumes for 3 days (different entrances) and passing out my resume to anyone driving in that would stop to talk to me and saying this is my dream company blah blah blah.

I had previously done that at Starbucks corporate and Microsoft with no luck. Each time telling them they were the only company I wanted to work for, fresh graduate, etc.

Get creative and show you actually want the job. Doing things the same way as everyone else doesnt get you noticed.

Once you have a regional super power on your resume, getting interviews at nearly any company in the region is easy, its just a matter of executing then. And companies like that are the best to build a network at since people are always coming and going. Thanks to that job I have contacts at virtually every major Washington and Oregon employer.

No.

But you will need experience in high-demand skills and the ability to self-promote (in resumes and in an interview).

Some military career fields will get you that experience... and pay you to learn it, too.

Security talked to me at each location. I wasnt allowed on company property, I had to stay on the sidewalk.

i have an ex that got a job at blue origin doing the same thing on my recommendation. After the first day she had the VP of HRs phone and e-mail and some big wig. She did that in 2020 like around June when no one was hiring. Once you have those contacts you get help getting interviews and then you let them know how it went and you can get real feedback.

Not at all.

Its an advantage, and a sizeable one at that. However, its not insurmountable. I had no connections to get me my current job and its a good one.
