we have nuclear fission plants, which produce toxic waste and can explode

nuclear fusion produces no toxic waste and will not explode (and if it did, it wouldn't contaminate the area, like Chernobyl).

Fusion is fueled by hydrogen, which is literally everywhere.
Fission is largely fueled by uranium, which is pretty rare, and not easy to get to.

It's a benchmark, not applicable yet. It means we're a decade away from a usable level, then 50 more years until any actual infrastructure is made.

D-T or lithium fusion farts out asstons of excess neutrons, which turns the reactor itself radioactive.

We could have had Thorium/MSR tech up and running 30+ years ago if it weren't for ManBearPig.
