Adds a lot of extra dynamics and not being able to fast travel makes me appreciate the world a lot more.

Plus all the combat mods that make the game so much better in the years I haven't played

Skyrim is legit a great game

It's just buggy as balls.

But beyond the bugs it's better than people like to pretend it is because they hate Bethesda

If Obsidain or From Software made it, it would be widely considered the best RPG ever made.

But because "Those poopheads" made it, it's considered bad

Was Oblivion also made by Bethesda? Because I like Oblivion. Skyrim is just boring which sucks because I love the setting.

Oblivion had way better guild quests
And arguably better music

I'd give the W to Skyrim on everything else.

Less enemy vareity, less variance in things to find when exploring, less interesting side quests, less interesting companions, only like 12 voice actors in the entire game (not that skyrim was all that much better)

Even bugs, Skyrim had less than Oblivion. (although again not saying much)

First playthrough I'd give to Oblivion due solely to the Guilds which sucked in Skyrim

Anything beyond first playthrough I'd give to Skyrim

Yeah.

In real life a single potato could pull me through an entire day.

In game, you're hungry again in under two minutes.

Other than that, I did like the dynamic challenges it brings.

Just wish the hunger aspect was more reasonable.

Same reason everything was dropped from FO3. Simplicity and wider reach. Everything is combat now, always.

Out of all the times I've played through Skyrim, I will say that I much preferred the playthroughs where I forced myself not to use fast travel. It's way more tedious for sure, but it also makes you think a little harder about which objectives you want to tackle, which loot you want to grab, and it also makes the world itself feel more tangible. My only complaint is that the map doesn't show roads, so it can be hard to plan your route.

Incidentally, on those playthroughs I always stop the main quest before dragons start spawning on the world map.

Indeed.

An argument can be made that Skyrim was too big and had too much in it

Shadow of Mordor came out a few years later. Was a fraction of the size, had minimal NPCs and hardly vareity/mechanics and was a kickass game.

More doesn't always mean better. It's a perspective thing.

I think Daggerfall is the biggest game in the series but no one likes it

I tried out survival mode. I only really enjoy the music in Skyrim, don't like the gameplay and don't care about the story/world. So it was mainly an excuse to listen to the soundtrack again. Survival would be better if...
-...food was rarer but also kept you satiated longer. As it is, food is everywhere and very easy to stock up on, and cook because salt piles are everywhere as well. But you also need to eat fairly often to prevent the negative effects of hunger. It makes the game more tedious, and not as immersive as you'd think as the real end result is you just end up spending more time in menus.
  • ...you could warm yourself up in more ways, or light various sconces/braziers with fire magic, or something. It's cool that it makes the overworld much more dangerous due to the cold reducing your health, to the point that in some areas you're basically on a time limit. All of that is really cool, and probably the single best thing about survival mode. What's not cool is coming across something that in real life could be lit/set on fire, but not being able to because the game wasn't really designed with these mechanics from the ground up.
  • ...carriages could take you to the homesteads you can build with the Hearthfire DLC.
  • ...lycanthropy and vampirism only conferred 50% disease resistance in survival mode. If you decide to play as a werewolf or vampire character, you're given complete immunity to all diseases, including the new ones. So an entire feature of survival is missing if your character is a werewolf or vampire.
Otherwise it's cool I guess.

When I played Elden Ring I actually thought "If a Bethesda game had this combat it would be the best RPG open world game ever made"

But all three developers have different strengths. Just depends what you care about more.

QOL deficiency =/= "immersion". That sounds brutal and boring.

Everyone walks the landscape early on, but after 20hrs and trying to do quests, you need FT. Otherwise its just aimless fluttering

Is there still in-universe teleporting? Like Morrowind there was no fast travel but there were ways to teleport and spells you could make to travel fast.

I'd say bad more than short

The Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood are pretty long, just badly written

Where as in Oblivion those 2 were great.

Bards and companions were short tho and also shit.

Mages was shit but that was even more shit in Oblivion

You can still use carriages and boats. They take in-game time relative to the distance needed to travel, and will drain hunger and fatigue accordingly. You may also be pretty cold upon arriving at some locations.

That sounds like a good enough middle ground for me, for whenever I get to it. A survival run sounds like it would be pretty fun.

its not. The game isnt honestly that big and theres enough dungeons and stuff in between that i dont get bored. I also have a horse and carriages.

im also not power leveling to max stats but i did actually get my sneak and smithing to 100 already and i barely got the windcaller horn thing.

That's because two minutes equals four hours in-game.
If you went for a four-hour stroll in the woods after eating a single potato you can be certain those the trees will start to look extremely appetizing before long.

EDIT: Sorry, I was mistaken. Two minutes equals one hour. Nevertheless, a single potato isn't a lot of calories.
