You're right. It's worse. They're not "making" anything. They're filling in boxes that tells a program what to steal from actual artists. At least with a Google search they wouldn't be stealing shit and claiming it as their own.

Uh... no person makes AI art though. For it's done by an AI. Isn't that the entire point?

I run Stable Diffusion locally off my gpu, I can help you set that up if you have a good GPU, or can also direct you to how to run it off of google collabs

running it yourself is not only free but allows you to learn how to do way more stuff with SD

What bothers me about this personally--as someone who draws and does 3D art for fun and self-betterment--is that some people seem to believe that typing some text into a box makes them an artist. There have been quite a lot of people popping up on social media claiming obvious AI art is something they've made from scratch. They know there is a difference between having a computer churn something out and honing your skills and senses and creating a piece from scratch in your medium of choice.

AI art can be fun to play around with, but I dislike the devaluing of real human skill and creativity. You aren't making the pieces the computer spits out, and you really do miss out on the personal growth and individuality that emerges from working in an actual medium. Folks have tried saying "prompt crafting" is a skill, but most prompts contain some really basic idea sandwiched between a bunch of word salad you copy and paste from other AI art to try and make the program spit out something decent. The computer can't capture the emotions, sensibilities, and real creativity that humans pour into their art, nor the negotiation between an artist and their medium when working on a piece

And it's not about gatekeeping. Anyone can learn to draw, paint, sculpt, or 3D model if they really want to. Art is about skill, not talent. Some things might come easier to some people than others, but that isn't a deciding factor.

I was referring to the process of creating the art, not the art itself. I'm aware that there are already pieces put out by AI that can fool people. I'm talking about the process and end result both being different for the person typing the prompt and pushing the button versus someone actually making art.

I felt this way two decades ago when people were using Photoshop because it was so much easier than "real" drawing or painting, and while I agree that people aren't necessarily the artists here as much as the program (programmer) is, I would never-the-less still consider it art. Art isn't about skill or talent. Art can literally be anything from anywhere. For reference, see DuChamp and all the Dadaists...

Ive always had more computer savvy than drawing savvy, I do both though as well as photography, Ive been working on AI art for two years, and use it in my workflow as well as for generating from scratch

my art is art just like anyone elses, me and my traditional artist friend have had this discussion many times, getting this shit to work on a high end, having good post production and touch up skills, taking time to learn prompt structure and what it does, its all work.

work is work, art is art, hand drawn will always have its spot and ai art relies on that

It is definitely cool, but it's clearly a passing novelty. At least as far as the wannabe artists.

Eventually people will be like "wait, I actually DON'T have to make a picture of literally anything I can think of."

I used to be pretty good at drawing, but I would focus and get impatient. So it often didn't work out. I still draw occasionally, but I'm really rusty and that bothers me and makes me more impatient.

The AI art is just quick fun. A lot of these I want to do my own take on them, but then again, I'd never be able to match what this can churn out in 30 seconds. :/

sure i get that, i have no problem w people who use AI art generation for fun or inspiration. My post was aimed at people who claim typing in prompts makes them an artist, or worse pretend to have drawn AI art by hand. It's skeevy for anyone to make money off of it, since the models are trained off the work of thousands of artists who didn't consent to having their work used
