Depends on the area, I guess. There are virtually no buses this far out in the suburbs (even though they really should be by this point), making those services a must for some.

This and its slow and its more of a pain bringing anything with you. Even just a back pack you gotta sit their with it on your lap on any busy bus. Or any bus unless you want it sliding off the seat onto bus floor at some point.

I'm not advocating for spending $20 -$40 for a ride, but the bus sucks. Last time I rode one, because my car was getting worked on. I had to wait like 15 minutes for the bus to come, pay them $2 to go to the main station, wait for another bus that I would have to pay $2 more for, and the whole trip would take like 2 hours. I elected to just walk home from the station instead of paying another $2.

Also it seemed like a lot of homeless people just use the bus for a bit of rest. Like I saw a guy get on the bus a short walking distance to walmart. He gets on the bus. The bus does this loop and stops somewhere for while. It later stops right next to walmart, and he gets off. He clearily had nothing to do.

I take the bus in the cooler months but the nearest stop is a mile away from me. I'd be drenched in sweat by the time I get there if I try walking to it between May and September, so it limits the practicality of it, especially if I have to present myself decently at my destination.

Outside of that, it gets me almost anywhere I need to go without much of a fuss.

Because some people prefer to spend more money and save time and arrive comfortable and presentable to wherever they're going, than spending less money but wasting up to an hour or even more, having been inside of a crowd, walked and sweated, etc.

we live in a generation that is anti social

people dont like talking to others

even with with Uber I give people 5 stars if they don't talk to me at all

its just better that way IMO

taking the bus adds too many factors

Most of these answers proves the car and other industries fucked over having great public transportation options a while back. An example is airplane and oil industry pay a lot of money to not make bullet trains between northern and southern california. It's just time vs money. The bus saves you money, but depending on the city, a bus ride can take 3x longer than a car ride. For example, the other day, I had to drive from East LA to El Segundo. It took me 30 minutes, so 35-40 minutes if I called an uber and waited. That trip by bus would have taken 1 hour and 45 minutes.

That's just not accurate. You can maybe go 4 mph walking. You should easily be going 40 mph while driving.

An uber from downtown in my city to my home is like, 10 minutes, max.

a bus from downtown in my city to my home is 2 buses and at least an hour of riding on the bus. And that's if its at beneficial times, since I live in a student neighbourhood and if it its late or the summer or whatever so 1/2 my buses don't even run and you can probably double the time it takes to bus home.

And if I'm not downtown, I need to take an extra bus to get there before I can go anywhere else.

I do my best not to use Uber... I've only used it from my phone 4 times. And 3 of those times were only because I had to get to work. The other time was I needed to get to the bar without my car to meet my friends, because I was getting very drunk... Because of that, I still have a 5 star rating...

Altogether, I've used it 8 times. I used it 4 times in October with my close friend's new husband's friends. We hung out the night before the wedding, and had two Ubers (one to downtown, and one back). And we had two the day after the wedding (to get to the breakfast place, and another to get back)... But I didn't pay for those...

As for the buses, many people have told all the answers. Buses obviously don't go everywhere... They also have schedules and routes. Depending on where you want to go, it can take almost 2 hours to get somewhere that would take much less time in a car. Like if you had to change buses or something... And many do close. My small town has a bus station that I worked at for a short time. Buses only run from 6am-6pm. And it's takes about an hour to do each route... So if you were going somewhere where you would have to switch switch buses, it could take almost 2 hours to get there, and almost 2 to get back. And hopefully, you have enough time for both rides. And hopefully, the bus isn't too full...

What I said is true. A trip that would take 5mins to drive would take about 10-15mins to walk. Of course depending on where you are, but nobody is walking on the freeway.

But what TC actually said was 5-10 miles, not mins.
