also I agree about the gem stuff and also just the number of skills in general. towards the end I was getting SP (or whatever) and spending it just to spend it.

Oh, right, skill bloat is pretty rough indeed. I'm defitelt just tossing points into raw stats now, because there's so many skills and so few slots, especially for passive skills where it just feels like 80% of them are going to go to waste.

The game is defitelly overstuffed in general, could have used some trimming. More isn't always better. But it's just not really hurting my enjoyment enough to bother me.

Even the last batch of skills usually had some interesting ones worth considering.

The most egregious dialogue stuff is when sometimes characters will randomly wax poetic like they in War of the Lions or something, even though they've never talked like that all game. It makes it hard to establish an inner voice.

Also when they randomly belt out swears sometimes like early 2000s Naruto fansubs....lol.

I feel like all the party members from Amalia onwards have been pretty awful. Mikah is the exception because she's a fucking beast, but here initial TP situation here before leveling skills has been absolutely dire. One full combo after the speed steps and she's bone dry.

I gotta say I was never bothered by the dialogue stuff, though your criticisms are certainly valid

it just adds to the old school experience having some wildly overwritten dialogue next to a completely flat line

Talking about this game feels the same to me as talking about SMTV, where almost everything I have to say is about some kind of problem but when you ask me how I actually like it I say "Oh yeah it's totally great" without hesitation, lol.

No performance issues in this one, though!

This Frederick twist of "I've been evil on purpose so people would wanna kill me" is actually really lame, this one actually hurts. There have been a lot of twists that feel like they only exists to have twists, but this is even more egregious to me than Glenn is Robb's dad.

I thought the swear-y dialogue was fun.

I destroyed the Goblin totem, but I feel like the Jan part of the postquest broke or something because I can't find him anywhere. I also couldn't find him in the Goblin village when he was supposed to be there.

This is the only truly bad writing imo, and it's really bad. My most charitable interpretation is its just an excuse he came up with knowing he was about to die, trying to save face with Lenne. Real vs fake redemption is the core theme of the game though, so it does fit conceptually. Just a really bad execution.

Yeah I didnt take that very seriously. I interpreted it as he eventually got to that point but only after a series of bad decisions convinced him that was his only out

Great game on the whole, definitely glad I played it. Ending was, uh...something. Certainly a lot of hanging threads there, huh?

I do think the first half of the game was a lot better than the second half. If it kept up that quality it would had been something super special. Second half was still good, though. Crazy how few people worked on this.

Honestly now I just really want those Suikoden Remasters to hurry up and come out.

Yeah, it definitely did some special stuff at the beginning and then you can tell they just needed to finish the game.

I would be extremely interested in a sequel because almost all of my problems with the game were solved by things that were done in the first half of the game (A split up portion of the game with the new characters to let you go through all of their skills for example)

My guess is with a bigger budget it could be the first half of the game all the way through

I think the game didn't need to add more length or polish, but cut some of the weaker parts (plot threads, characters). The game was definitely long enough already.
