If you ignore most trainers and beeline towards the objectives (in the correct order), it's pretty challenging. I wiped on the final team boss like 4 times. I've played through the entirety of Blue using only an unevolved Meowth. It was stupidly easy. There seems to be this perception that back in the day Pokemon was harder, and that simply wasn't ever true. And everyone always goes on how the exp share makes the game too easy now, when that has nothing to do with the difficulty. And all the exp share really does is remove grinding.
