One of my writing teachers once told me that good writing is like building a house. A house is a beautiful thing, a work of art.

And that bad writing is akin to a pile of bricks. The MGS franchise can fill a galaxy full of bricks and still have some left over with how bad the writing and games are and how it just goes on and on and on, with little in the way of cohesion, consistency, or purpose.

My reaction would probably be to drop the class entirely.

It would be cool I guess. Had a teacher that played a green day song and gave us a print out of the lyrics and had us analyze it like it was a regular poem. Thought that was cool enough.

Worth noting that the lady who localized Metal Gear Solid into English said she thought the writing was awful and Kojima was a hack.

"I think he's very bad at character, and I think he's extremely conventional, as in non-creative, when it comes to plotting. I know that I'll probably get an incredible amount of hate karma - can you say hate karma? - about this. So I'll just say that I did grow up reading, I told you I grew up without TV, so I read instead.

And I like Cormac McCarthy, and the science-fiction writers; I love Frank Herbert, I love Alfred Bester, right now I really like Greg Egan, so I am extremely picky, and I do have a high standard when it comes to writing.

I think that if you're ripping off Tom Clancy, it's...Tom Clancy is Tom Clancy, he deserves all the money and fame. The guy has worked hard. Writing is hard work. So to shoot out a bunch of these kinds of things, that we've been talking about, and then claim yourself as a writer when...And you know, there's good work being done in games. I think Portal is really well written, very beautifully written, but Kojima's stuff is...Fine, be a game creator, and know what you're not very good at, and learn to work with people who are. Stanley Kubrick, famously, the one thing he could not do was write.

He could do everything else, but he didn't know how to write, so he worked with good writers, and worked with them in a very sort of relentless partnership. He knew his limits. I don't think Kojima's a writer. The fact that he would even be considered one shows how low the standards are in the game industry. Nothing in MGS2 is above a fanfic level. He wouldn't last a morning in a network TV writers' room, and those aren't exactly turning out the Dark Tower series or The Wire."

Ironically despite the low pay, quantity of work and difficulties placed upon her, Agness wasn't even credited in MGS2. Though she doesn't mind too much, "No, at the time, like a lot of people, I thought that I would possibly get into the game industry through this. And to all the boys and girls listening, no, that just doesn't happen. But since then one of the things I've done, is I've become a ghost. And I'm not being all metaphysical. I've been a ghost writer as well, so I don't mind [lack of credit] as long as the understanding is there from the beginning."

Even worse was the unfair fan criticism she received, as mentioned earlier. "Yeah, it happens. I think part of it is, I think, because I'm a woman. And because I've been outspoken about the fact that I do not think this stuff is well written. So it's a bit of: 'What the hell does that girl know?' kind of thing. And perhaps the criticism about Kojima not knowing a lot of women, perhaps hit home with some of the fans?

Obviously these games wouldn't exist, and I wouldn't have had work if there weren't that many fans, but sometimes you just kind of wanna go: 'It's just a game! I mean it's got characters named Liquid and Solid, go outside for a second!''

So I ask, would there have been less criticism if she were a man, or perhaps worked under a male pseudonym? "I think it's possible. But you know, I have been surprised at the number of assumptions made about me, as a translator, and a writer, over the years. Like because I have a Japanese last name, people have said well, you know, you're clearly not a native speaker of English, so you don't understand this. Or I've been told: well, you're clearly an American, so you don't understand the original Japanese. And of course there's the whole, well, you must not know about weapons, because you're a girl. Well, in fact I was on the rifle team in College too. So yeah, you have to get used to it."
