I've only played the opening bits due to the horrible release timing, but I look forward to coming back to this.

Depends on what you focus on, but I'd say in general the reception was lukewarm / mildly positive, not "really bad".

It's a fun game. I think people just got pissed that it's like, 75% visual novel, 25% SRPG. Even though they advertised it as such. I saw a LOT of "It's mostly a visual novel wuuuuut?!" posts here when it released because people apparently don't do five seconds of research before buying a game.

Yeah, most of the reception I've heard is that it's good, with the majority of complaints being from people who don't like visual novels.

Wish I had picked it up when it was 17 bucks.

A lot of people expected Digimon Tactics, but the game's focus is mostly on the visual novel aspects. The SRPG sections tend to be criticized for being fairly underdeveloped as a result, and that negative conversation sort of took center stage. The rest of the game has been praised and well-received from what I've been able to see.

I had been waiting for the game to go on sale and finally went for it over Black Friday when it was available for less than $20. Very excited to finally play it.

I stopped about 6-7 hours in when I learned I can't even get the good ending of the game the first time no matter what I do and none of the choices I made up to that point made any difference in any capacity. I don't have the time to spend playing the game for 40 hours and then doing ANOTHER run of 40 hours just to get the proper ending.

That and I honestly think a lot of the characters are written pretty poorly, I had much higher expectations in the character aspect of things.

Nothing, probably. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to get the best ending on the first run, since certain events are scripted to happen and are unavoidable on the first run. On subsequent runs, you are able to do things to change them. The game is meant to be played multiple times, like games like 999.

The first part killed a lot of my interest in continuing.

I do get why that can turn people off, but I'm also used to it. Games like 999, Lost Dimension, etc., expect you to do multiple runs to get the best ending.

I enjoyed 999 and VLR. The way the game is set up as well as gameplay is completely different to those. It has the same aspect sure, but by no means are they "that" similar.

I partially disagree, but mainly because it appears it's going to take me much less than 40 hours to complete my first run, so I'm not sure we played the same way. Your average run of Survive does take longer than your average run of 999, for instance, but that's because Survive has actual gameplay incorporated in it instead of being purely a visual novel. You take that gameplay out and make it pure visual novel, and it probably takes the same time or less. Thus, mileage will vary between players.

We'll agree to disagree. I mean I dropped the game at 9.5 hours in.

I played VLR to its completion.

I disagree that your choices matter like they do for 999 or VLR. From what I saw, the game was on a complete script for those nearly 10 hours and literally everything I did to gain friendship with a certain character did nothing and they and their best digimon died anyways. Further more, it spoiled another character dying in the future because both of those partners' digimon can't use the "cheer" or whatever ability. It literally just spelled out who was going to die for sure.

And the fact that doing those things ONLY matters if you waste 40 hours getting a bad ending or whatever and then doing those same specific things again, is, I dunno, it's trash.

Maybe I'd be able to grind through it if I had any interest in the main cast, but I really really don't get what people see in them.

Your choices don't really matter for the first run, yeah, but they do for subsequent runs.

It was a gamble that they took, basically, to prolong the game length.

Like said, I understand that being off-putting to people. I just kinda expected it, I guess.
