We weren't exclusive at all and had only made out. Then out of nowhere she calls me crying and tells me her brother died, so it kind of killed everything. We're still interested in each other but she's taking a break from dating because obviously it's a huge thing and it's super awkward since I don't really know her that well, so I don't know how to comfort her and just want to leave her alone so she can heal or whatever. We kept chatting and never hung out again since the summer was really busy for both of us. At the end of the summer, I started college and moved my job to a very "part time" basis. She however, moved into a position where she was technically in charge of me. She reconnected with me via text back in September. We chattered a bit over October and she admitted to wanting to try to start things up again. We hung out recently and it went really well (we hung out again the next day). On the second hangout we ended up making out. We parted on pleasant terms but she was withdrawn after. We texted on and off but it felt very... distant. About a week later she texts acknowledging that she's been distant and apologizing for it. She mentions that after we had hung out, the "weird position" she was in with me (she's new to her job, she's technically my superior) became very real to her and she got really stressed out about it. I kept a level head, accepted what she told me, and mentioned that while I liked hanging out with her and was looking forward to doing so again, she's gotta take care of herself first. She had made comments throughout this convo about how much fun she had had and how she had been looking forward to hanging out with me again before this episode but that she just didn't feel she had the emotional stability to handle the personal/professional barrier rn. She thanked me for being understanding and for not trying to pressure or guilt her, called me a good person, and that was that. Last week I got my school schedule for next semester and had to transfer out of her department. I kept getting anxious that it'd look like I was transferring out as a dramatic thing because of all of this, so I caved and sent her a heads up being like "yo this is gonna happen, just an fyi it's because of school not our last convo". She was very friendly and nice about it but the convo was brief. Apart from that I see her once or twice a week and our interactions are completely normal and pleasant. I'm trying to make plans for a first date with someone who really wants me to go to her younger sibling's school play and to meet her parents. We've been talking for several months now, have had "not a date" hangouts, and will probably stay friends because we get along well enough but I'm super uneasy about her wanting to meet her parents at this point. Probably will go just 'cause but I'm not expecting anything. I hooked up with an ex I never got a chance to have sex with but it was super awkward and neither of us has reached out since, nor do I plan to. We dated over ten years ago and are such different people that just being around her didn't even feel like the "us" I spent so much time agonizing over. I always felt like she was "the one" and regretted ending things with her, so it's kind of funny that we're apparently both just "meh" at each other.
