"Decisions" is a loaded word and is misunderstood when discussed as pop science.

The hypothesis is just trying to rectify the 50/50 true uncertainty of quantum 'observations' (when a small particle interacts with anything else basically). Instead of there being a "collapse" of the wave function, the idea is it never collapses and just has branches. It's completely un-test-able and speculative.

I want to know more why this occurs less so if it could.

I could believe if it could happen but what exactly is driving this divergence and why is it so discrete (everyone ever who made this decision has a parallel reality where they made the other decision with nothing in between)?

yea it's bunk

a string is very, very small. as human we are limited in how we can observe things. imagine you are trying to study lego blocks and how they fit together, but all you have is a cannon that fires baseballs and it's also built out of baseballs and also your camera is built out of a giant sponge that the baseballs hit.

you would not learn very much about legos shooting baseballs at them all day.

don't fall for the multiverse of madness.

Think about it like this, if an ant took a different path then maybe others would follow suit and suddenly it takes a bit longer for you to realize your apartment has a bunch of them and one day you wake up because one bit your ankle. That's not a large difference in the trajectory of your life, but the ensuing smooshing of the ant means that what some ant days ago did caused another unrelated ant to get killed.

But wait, that's not the end of that trajectory. Very slight variations in how you react to the ant will affect countless other things and they slowly but surely add up to something larger.

physicist talks about all the bullshit in popular and professional physics. i say this shit on CE and get told i dont know what the fuck im talking about (in reality i keep up-to-date with every major peer reviewed discovery in physics and I know enough calculus to make sense of it. if you don't know Gauss and curves, for example, you can't really understand how our universe is "flat")

edit: that article/interview is only 4 days old but it's talking about exactly what we're talking about.

i say the biggest problems with the general population's knowledge of physics are:

-not knowing wtf dark matter is
-not knowing wtf dark energy is
-not knowing the difference between the "dark matter" inside a black hole and the "dark matter" that holds together a galaxy
-not really understanding black holes, hawking radiation, event horizons, etc.
-believing that literal "singularities" exist (i.e. infinitely-dense points in spacetime. they dont, it's just the math breaks down)
-belief in the "big bang" as opposed to cosmic inflation
-lack of knowledge of the timescale of the universe (i think most people get that the universe is BIG, they just dont know how old it is or how much longer it will last, easy questions to answer).
-random multiverse bullshit
-not understanding the nature of the quantum world, even a little, or thinking about how things look different at different scales

just off the top of my head

The idea that the universe makes quality decisions on which choices requires it to branch itself off is something that some people believe and doesn't think is nuts, I guess.

No I'm just explaining it terribly. What TC is talking about is the many worlds theory. It's a theory that's based on quantum mechanics. Basically the idea is that when you are faced with a scenario with multiple outcomes, the other possibilities don't just cease to exist afterwards. Instead those possibilities continue on in other universes.

Like, say there's a scenario where, you could have died. There's another universe where you did die.

Almost nothing in the universe works they way the human mind instinctively thinks it does. There are prominent physicists who believe in the existence of multiple universes, and apparently the math checks out. "It seems weird to me so it can't be true" is not really a great way to figure out how anything works or why.

It would be exciting to know if multiple universes exist, and if they do, how many exist and how often new branches of reality are created.

Unless this was very recently, I'm not aware of anybody that actually buys the "many worlds" multiverse outside theoretical thought experiments.

Currently, we may be in a multiverse, but all that means is that the universes are just bubbles and others outside of our own would exist. Completely unique and not a branched reality.

there is no "may" about it, it's obvious. but, what do we even call our universe? things in space that are, say 100 billion light years away, physically, are not inside our universe by any definition.

how many stars are in a galaxy? how many bubbles are in boiling water? we don't know exactly, but one gets the idea that there are a shitton of stars. the model that makes the most sense is a super-universe that is very large. inside there is ball of ultra-dense energy (as compacted as energy can physically become: almost every single "bit" will be "on") that creates solar-flare like phenomena we call the observable universe. these bubbles expand and fly through super-space, a place that is probably/maybe similar to an empty vacuum. time progresses linearly because of the inertia of the initial expansion, just like a rock would fly through empty space forever.
