https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/jury-reaches-verdict-oath-keepers-jan-6-seditious/story?id=93866832

The jury has reached a verdict in the trial of Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes and his four associates charged with seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Along with Rhodes, Kelly Meggs, Kenneth Harrelson, Thomas Caldwell and Jessica Watkins all fellow Oath Keeper members and associates were also on trial on various charges, including and beyond seditious conspiracy.
Rhodes and Meggs were found guilty of seditious conspiracy.
Caldwell, Harrelson and Watkins were found not guilty of seditious conspiracy.
Jurors reached their determination on the third day of deliberations following a trial in federal court in Washington that spanned weeks.

Elmert Stewart Rhodes (leader) and Kelly Meggs were found guilty of seditious conspiracy, but the other 3 in this trial were found not guilty of that charge. Not sure about the other charges they were facing yet, but these verdicts just dropped

I'm not sure, but they're facing a bunch of other charges. I think the details of those should drop soon now. I'm assuming the verdicts are being read at the momen. I wish they allowed the media to have cameras in this trial. I would have been watching every bit of it.

Here's the superseding indictment they were all facing.

Seditious conspiracy has an extremely high bar to actually be convicted. More than likely while there was enough evidence to say beyond a shadow of a doubt that two of the people involved explicitly wanted to overthrow the government with their actions for the rest there was only bits and pieces of evidence that went that far.

Sedition is basically a step below treason and it's incredibly difficult to actually convict people for it so this is pretty massive.

Absolutely. This is the biggest January 6th trial so far. Multiple members of the Proud Boys will also be on trial for seditious conspiracy, I believe.

i don't think they did it for donald trump. they did it because of barack obama. trump was just the schlub in the right place at the right time to encourage them to act. it was the prior eight years that proved that their worldview was in trouble and there was no way to save it without destroying the system entirely.

Eh, they may have indeed been pissed off because Obama became president, but they're on record saying they wanted Trump to invoke the insurrection act to give them permission to what they did and worse in order to keep the transfer of power from happening.

I'm wondering if the people who still have cases pending for seditious conspiracy are now scrambling to see if they can still get a plea deal.

Here's a fun fact about Stewart Rhodes: he wears an eyepatch because he once shot himself in the face while mishandling his gun.

The convictions are a good sign though I'm surprised you only get 20 years for seditious conspiracy when treason gets you death o.0

I wonder what the sentencing guidelines are for seditious conspiracy, though. The obstruction of an official proceeding charge also carries a max sentence of 20 years, but the people convicted of that have been getting sentenced to like 4 years or so. Hopefully sedition carries a much harsher punishment

There is a pretty substantial difference. Seditious conspiracy is specifically when you largely don't actually perform and action against the state (things like inciting rebellion fall into this category) while treason is when you actually levy war or give aid to someone at war with the US.

That said the main reason that treason isn't a thing here is because of the run-off and how it would start to actively implicate Republicans of crimes. It has already been a long road to get any relevant charges, throwing that into the mix would probably kill it off entirely.

Treason CAN get you death. It's not the minimum punishment.

Sedition hasn't been a thing since the John Adams era. You have to truly fuck up to be convicted of that 200 years later.
