The Beyond Skyrim project is one of the bigger mod projects for the game.

Their mods add (or aim to add) additional provinces to the game. Bruma is in Cyrodiil, the province Oblivion takes place in. They're working on Elsweyr, Morrowind, and Atmora at the moment I think. I haven't really messed with them too much, but I've had Beyond Skyrim: Bruma installed on like my last three playthroughs. It has over 3 million unique downloads.

Their community page has been usurped by one the lead developers who has demodded all other members and has been for the last few days in the middle of a very public mental health episode. Dozens of posts insisting that the "lore" of Elder Scrolls is actually historic accounts of ancient civilizations, and that Todd Howard is at the center of a CIA cover up conspiracy.

It's.... messy.

I don't know where the Beyond Skyrim project's at exactly in Current Year, but it's always struck me as just a wee bit over-ambitious. They basically want to remake entire past games within the Skyrim engine / time period, with all that entails - new models for weapons, armor, architecture, clutter; new quests, new characters, new voice acting, etc. Being a lowly console peasant I only got to experience a small chunk of that (Bruma), which was years in the making despite only being a single Cyrodillic city out of nine with a relatively-small chunk of landscape around it.

A group of hobbyists spending years working on something like that - with all the hype and pressure such a project would create yet with no opportunity to benefit financially from it - and somebody's going to crack eventually.
