Anonymity doesn't adequately explain it actually, given we see the same behavior in spaces where that anonymity is no longer a factor.

In reality I think its the detachment from face-to-face communication.

Anecedotally, I like a lot of people am very familiar with how incredibly abusive people can be when calling into a customer service line. But Im willing to bet the vast majority of those people wouldn't act the way they do if they were talking to me in person.

I feel like there is more to it than that, because I try to be nice to people even if I'm on the phone with tech support. There's no reason to be mean and nasty to them. It's gotta be some kind of cluster-B personality disorder or something.

I came into this topic to post something close to this. I know i've definitely been guilty of this. I used to troll the FF14 boards back in 2017/2018 because I was far from stable and happy, and trolling topics and telling them to "come back to me when you can parse sub-XXXX in X fight" made me momentarily laugh before I went back to being a miserable bastard.

I'm still far from happy and old habits can kick in, but I feel like i've been improving through these years.

For sure its not the only thing. Entitlement and narcissism are in there too, but it takes a special kind of person to be that abusive in person. (Ie, Karens)

They blame everything else for their shortcomings except themselves. So, it feels justified in their head. Along with what others here said. It's no one thing. I dunno. Im definitely nicer when Im feelin myself, so I can say from experience that it's partly the life lacking thing. My mean caps out at a very low ceiling at least. I immediately feel guilt regardless of mood
