I rec getting all 3 and maxing them out quick. Its okay to use items excessively. Youll get LOTS. Punisher mode for Cloud is pretty powerful and its counterattack will see you through many engagements. Switching characters a lot during a fight is key. Direct control is how you build everyones ATB, so get used to it early. Game is pretty straightforward. His materia is generally better than all other materia. Try to diversify though and max out at least 1 of all materia when you can.
