Started with Tau, then Custodes, dabbed a little in Necrons, and now Astra Militarum is looking hella sexy....

They are too damn expensive for me to be jumping around so much.

I never really liked them. I mean I can see the appeal but there's just too many units so with balance changes its likely that your favorite units might get moved in and out to the meta.

I wanted to play WH Fantasy because I always preferred medieval fantasy to sci-fi. But all my friends wanted to play or were playing 40K.
I wanted to play as Eldar or Chaos, but my friends had a bunch of regular Space Marines they got w/ paint sets or something and gave to me for cheap.
Well, I had infantry, but to actually have a competitive/functional army, I needed tanks. And heavy weapons units. And assault troops. And terminators.
And that's the story of how I ended up spending like $500 on an army I was only mildly interested in, in a game I was only mildly interested in.
Still got said Space Marine army in storage, haven't touch it since I was a teenager, lol

It's mostly cuz I got into warhammer cuz of Horus Heresy so I try to keep my army Heresy compliant

Yeah I can see stuff like that happening a lot.

One big problem 40k has is there isn't a clear cut "This army plays like this" and so I don't think I know many people who still play they army they started with.

i've been really tempted to get some Necron... like a TON of Tombblades, but I have no one to play with (plus I'm antisocial)

Eh, I knew how Space Marines play. I just found it boring... Not much variety in the troop choices. They're all pretty tough, pretty strong, not exceptional at anything.. Closest to an exception are the terminators, loved those guys. Could recklessly deep strike them behind the entire enemy army and they'd manage to survive for most of the battle all on their own while the rest of my army got into position and wrecked from the front.
But aside from terminators... all the space marine stuff was so overpriced (in point value). key to victory ended up being fielding as few specialist troops as possible to deal w/ the stuff they're needed for (like heavy weapons to blow up tanks), and just max out the number of regular dudes w/ bolters otherwise. I usually just won battles from sheer withering boltgun fire and holding ground from charges w/ tons of basic space marines.... It was effective, but super boring.

I like more specialized or melee-focused armies. Eldar have that craft world where you can use more squads of the aspect warriors and less of the guardians... Chaos just has all sorts of wacky stuff. Tyranids were pretty cool, too.

Necrons are fun(and stupid easy) to paint.

Sounds like you may also like Custodes, might be worth looking into if you wanna get into a new army.

I say it's the 'rule of 3' that ruined comp, since it's no longer possible to truly "stack" your army for a singular task...

Even then, apparently 3 was too much and aircraft got limited to 2... and then ONE!!

I always liked the idea of air, but its one of those things that you don't see often in actual armies. At least in my area. But that being said, the Valkrie is the reason I wanna get into Astra Militarum as its the best looking flyer in the game IMO.

Even before. I think I only seen one, which was a stormtalon because her boyfriend got it for her for christmas. (even she didn't know why he did it)
