If I have this right the crew is on the run from Blackrun and had to leave everything because the Pinkertons are chasing them. They chill in the snow and eventually find a warmer location They inadvertently rob Leviticus Cornwall multiple times, he finds out and goes after them forcing them to leave They find a new spot and start working for 2 rich families who hate each other. They're from all over, but when the game starts they've just had to flee Blackwater (not Blackrun) because something went very wrong. Dutch killed a woman and some shooting happened. I dunno if the game ever explains it beyond that, which you get at a very early point. Also they left a ton of money there hidden somewhere Beyond that you more or less have it right beyond forgetting that every time you accidentally fuck with Cornwall, the Pinkertons inevitably show up each time very soon after and make you move --- I pray god will curse the writer, as the writer has cursed the world with this beautiful, stupendous creation, terrible in its simplicity, irresistible in truth ...
