Depends:

-giving opens up opportunities
-receiving means you get more stuff

C., for me.

I don't really care about receiving gifts anymore - I'm not too much into material stuff these days, and I can buy stuff for myself, if I want anything.

but when getting stuff for others/helping them out, it's nice to see how appreciative some people can be.

I don't have a list of things I want apart from one game that can't presently be purchased.
I'm not very good at the whole "Oh wow you got me this oh golly sick tight gnarly great" acting when opening or receiving this.
Even if you try to nip it all in the bud with the "My gift is that you don't have to buy me a gift" thing, some people either don't think you're serious or try to reject it.
I can't really explain this one but I just refuse to buy things for myself for some reason and it extends to gifts. I sometimes wonder if it's a symptom of something. I don't want to be pulled into some obligation to return the favor or participate in future maybe.

With other people it's much easier because you can just look at what they like and don't have, what the profess to what, practical things, you can go "Look I don't know how to pick out a good lasting gift so can I just buy you a pile of your preferred junk food?"
With other people there's strategies at least, with people coming at you with gifts you're at their mercy.

I understand. I mean, I don't necessarily agree but I understand.

To me, giving is putting some effort into figuring out what someone will like and putting the efforts towards that.

Receiving is literally just doing nothing and getting something
