When I renewed my driver's license I was asked if I wanted real ID and I said no because [no remember why] . Now no one can fly without it.

All sorts of documents are required. Seriously, someone who can plan a terrorist attack is going to balk at real ID? Who believed this argument?

Or you could get a passport.

They've been rolling out Real ID for like a decade. Everyone should have it at this point. If you don't, get a passport.

To be fair, some states won't issue them. My state of Missouri refuses to change our driver's licenses to comply with the Real ID law. I got a passport instead.

They announced that this was coming for years and years. You shouldve asked what are the benefits to each.

It's the same goddamn thing as a regular one, which is already required.

Yeah the only RealID I know of is the one Blizzard tried to implement a while back.

I'm in the process of changing my ID over for real ID and all they need is

1.) Birth Certificate
2.) Change of address confirmation with USPS
3.) Phone bill attached to the address.

It's extremely easy, and some states even let you travel to Canada and Mexico with your realID. Not flying, mind you. Just driving across the border.

Isn't the fact that it is so easy to get this ID an argument it does nothing to make air travel safer?

I always take my passport when I fly anyways, so I couldn't really care less and didn't bother with it last time I renewed my license. My state (Alaska) kept getting extensions for holding off on Real ID, I actually have no idea whether or not it's "required" for us yet.

Literally why didn't you get it? I got mine and I don't have to renew it for another 8 years.

It's free and the requirements to get one are extremely lax. If you refused to get one just because you had the option to refuse, outside of any other legitimate reason, then the consequences are entirely on you.

I didn't get one because I won't be going anywhere. But why the hell didn't you get one if you were going to?

1. Does not thwart terrorists
2. Does thwart non terrorists
3 increased the cost of id significantly:
A. birth certificates can cost a lot if you cannot get yours in person. Not everyone lives where he was born
B. Illinois drivers license still cost $30 whether you want the star or not. Cost used to be $5

Well it's because Real ID was entirely reactionary to 9/11. Some of the terrorists were able to get state IDs via falsified documents, and as such, they were able to board planes.

That's pretty much the only reason Real ID exists.

Much like nigh everything else we have to deal with with regards to the TSA.

I wouldn't care as much if we didn't have to directly pay for it.

I think REAL ID is the only option in Florida.

This is the first I've heard of Real ID so as a Brit with more than a passing interest in secure identity documents I've had a quick look at what it is. It appears to be an act laying down a minimum spec of what will be considered valid ID with regards to security features, etc.

So how is that a bad thing? Are they that much more expensive than a regular driving licence or passport? Or is this just more of a "the MAN can't tell ME what to do" thing?

Some privileges are expensive.

You either deal with it or you dont travel.

It'd not that they don't understand, it's that the explanation is nonsensical.

Basically, the explanation can be boiled down to:

Yes, you need an ID. Yes, your driver's license is your ID. But your current drivers license isn't an ID. Yes, I did just say that your driver's license is your ID, but your driver's license isn't good enough to be your ID so it isn't, even if I just said it is.

What do you mean, you don't understand? How hard is it do understand that the ID that I just said is your ID is not your ID and can't be counted as your ID even if it is your ID even though it isn't.

I feel that we're kind of getting away from the point here, which to be honest TC is not really doing well at either.

The point being that traveling by air is contingent on following certain rules, and these rules are in place for safety and security.

And that this PARTICULAR rule set is the result of a single terrorist attack, and that following these rules arbitrarily charges the citizen additional fees beyond ticket prices of flying with the airline. You are paying fees to the state (outside of one's own taxes) to travel with a commercial airline.

If they want federally secure IDs then fine. Just don't make the citizen directly pay the end cost.

They'll never do that, though, because these agencies are grossly underfunded. Hell in my state of Massachusetts and others, AAA has taken on some of that burden for the services. In multiple states you can go to a AAA as long as you're a paying member and pay the fee to get your RMW services.

Yeah, fuck this shit. I have been able to walk to Canada from NY with just my license for decades. Here, you only get upgraded for free if your renewal is up AFAIK. Renewals are 8 years, so everybody else will be forced in a few months.
