Watching ep 5 of The Sandman and its definitely one of those, but really good.

I know the fly in Breaking Bad is divisive but typically touted as an example.

There's a lot of anime filler that's fun but you have to have the patience to not care about advancing the story

Episode 5 of Sandman? The Netflix show base on Neil Gaiman's comic's? I'd recommend finishing it before talking about whether it's advancing the plot or not, unless I am mistaken which episode that was.

The Beach and Footloose episodes of Avatar: TLA. I know the Footloose ep (I think it's official name is 'The Headband?') isn't as universally praised, but I still think it's very cute; it's also one of the few instances in the series where Aang actually earns Katara's affections through genuine swag, rather than their romance simply falling back on hero + heroine predestination.

Generally speaking, I find time loop episodes to be a lot of fun, even though they usually end in a reset and rarely advance the plot (with some exceptions).

Examples include:
Legends of Tomorrow
Stargate SG1
The Librarians
Supernatural (kinda, I guess this does somewhat advance the plot later on)

Most of Cowboy Bebop. That show only has really six or so episodes attached to the core plot.

That episode of The Killing where the two cops are just driving around looking for the main lady's kid is the best episode of the show by a mile, even though it pretty much sacks off the main story entirely.
