ngl, even during a simpler time when I considered FF peak video game storytelling, this scene fell majorly flat for me, and was carried exclusively by the music.

FF9 is my favorite jrpg, but this scene never did it for me the way it seems to do for most fans. It's good, but I didn't get worked up over it.

My only problem with it was that it felt too forced and rushed. *vague spoilers, I guess* Here we have this plucky, likeable, generally-unfazed hero figure who's only really had one scene hinting at his backstory before arriving on Terra, but at the eleventh hour we need to dump a crisis of identity / sense of abandonment on him so that the other party members can have an excuse to rally around him while the (admittedly very awesome) music swells around them.

It's fair to assume that Zidane was an overcorrection from the moodiness of the two MCs that preceded him, yet they felt they had to give him a sudden injection of angst at the last second to give him some depth. And the scene loses whatever gravity it might have had when Zidane gets over it just as swiftly as he's taken down by it.

I'm pretty sure I finished FF9, and I don't remember that part at all.
Really, all I remember is hating the equipment-based ability system, and some tree exploding.

Really, I could've excused a lot of it if he had done some real damage to innocent people, giving him something to be more genuinely damaged over.
