They're fine. Not really that appealing beyond the novelty but I can't say that I would necessarily turn it down if I wanted fruit.

I always wanted to try one, idk where to get it fresh though. I've seen frozen ones at the Japanese market, but buying a whole one feels like too big a commitment if I don't like it

Custard-y. It literally melts if you heat it, but its not sticky.
It really does smell wretched, but it tastes a lot better than it smells, IMO. You can sometimes find it in Asian markets, usually in the cooler or freezer section, since chilling it deadens the stench.

Somebody sent Perry Caravello a durian as a prank, but it was frozen. He had to be gaslit into putting it in the microwave.
