While google docs has made major gains, both it (and google sheets) lacks word/excel in several ways. Here are a few:

-intuitive date filtering, with cascading y-m-d filters. They dont do that, they do a flat filter

-equation editor. Impossible to use without "coding". Which is as simple as typing shit like \hat or whatever, but to the average office worker, this is infinitely harder than the MS Word way (point and click)

-Numbered lists when converting from PDF -- google docs cannot get numbered lists correct. a 1-2-3-4 in PDF would come out as, for example, 1-2-1-2 in google docs.

However, Google sheets is better than excel for a few things. For one, their =query() formula, which is like fisher-price SQL scripting.

MS Word/Excel/Office in general does have an online version now too that is fully collaborative, just like sheets, so Google has lost that advantage that they used to have.

Nah, bruh. Microsoft Excel is where its at with the satanic hall of tortured souls and all that jazz.

(Satanic is in quotes since I recall folks freaking out about this Easter egg back in the day and chain letters being sent warning that your name supposedly gets added to the list as the alleged curse is afflicted upon you for daring to visit the hall of tortured souls.)

Docs has utility in certain situations. Say you're a part of a team -- could be a marketing team at work, a group project in college, etc. Google docs allows multiple people to edit the same doc in real time, without duplicating files. This can come in really handy. Now, MS Word has the same, but Google does the online collab a bit better.

google went HARD on getting a shitload of businesses and schools on their platform, offering steep discounts in order to gain market share. And they succeeded -- they are the defacto "go-to" for online collaboration. Even though MS has the same features, people in large still use MS Office in the offline environment.
