I mean not entirely because my brother works in the car industry BUT

it's fucking madness that you can't just buy a car, you have to negotiate a deal with a guy in a suit who doesn't even own the car. Like his entire purpose of being is to lie to you and get you on the shittiest deal possible, and the only thing preventing that is your own hardiness.

Imagine if literally anything else was like that. Like buying a croissant from a bakery required you having a conversation with a man who wants to shake your hand every 4 minutes just so you agree whether knock 30 cents off the asking price.

Hate it.

Agreed. I find there is less pressure the less the vehicle costs, though.

I like to set an out the door price. If they can't meet it, it's no sale.

I used to work in a dealership for a couple of years and my impression of car salesman is that the less the cars cost and the older they are, the more cutthroat and dirty the sales guys can be.

I knew a guy who lied to a nun about his faith so that he could sell a car. Straight up pretended to be born-again so that she would trust him. All for a 5 year old honda civic.

I think there are a couple places that aren't like this, like Carmax. It's definitely the standard, I'm not a fan of haggling either.

This is why I still walk to work.

Fuck going through that effort with prices and gas through the roof.

I dont mind it, but Im older now and have been through the process enough times to be able to use the BS to my advantage.

Of recent purchases, 2/3 instances were ones where I basically went off the online price so no haggling was involved there. The main goal was hitting a target with my trade ins, as they both had plenty of issues so although I was getting less than KBB, overall the deal was fair.

In one instance though they were severely trying to lowball me on the trade in, so I just stood up and walked out. At that point they came running out to renegotiate and ended up caving in quite well.

Thats all there is to it really. Go in with a target in mind, and fully being prepared to just stand up and walk out if it comes to that. As long as youre not in a position where you absolutely have to have the car or get emotionally attached, you can beat them at their own game.

Pretty sure gas/payment/insurance would be more then my rent.

If I had the option I would absolutely get rid of the car, but my commute is 10 miles and not the sort of roads I'd feel safe cycling on.

This is why I order my car online straight from the manufacturer and set up the financing that way, then all I have to do is sign the paperwork and pick up the car at a dealership.
