I've been wondering because yesterday I went to a new greek food shop and ordered some take out. I ordered a gyro combo and one gyro by itself. Was expecting two sandwiches but got loose gyro meat with rice/salad and more gyro meat in another container. I always assumed a gyro was a sandwich by default.

It is literally just the meat, but in places like America it generally refers to the wrap. It's sort of like how "curry" means literally anything spiced in India but in the rest of the world it means "stuff in a spicy sauce."

The thick tortilla is called a pita, not a sandwich. Some people call it "gyro on pita"

Its just the meat. I go to a place where you can get the meat with rice and a salad and such. But yes, its not a sandwich, its the meat.

A bit like Christmas Cake in Japan is a totally different product from a Christmas Cake in the West. Despite them both being Christmas Cakes.
