I can be pretty unnecessarily paranoid about it. It doesn't help that I live alone now, for the time being.
Always checking each room with a pocket knife on hand when I come home, peeking out the windows every few minutes, getting jumpy when I hear sounds from outside, door stays completely locked 24/7, a bat and a knife hidden next to my bed, etc.

I've never experienced a break-in, attempted or otherwise, but I don't know how I'd react in that situation. It's one of my greatest fears.

Nope, it's never been a worry. Someone would either have to open my deadbolt, or destroy a glass window/arcadia door. There's no way in without attracting a lot of attention.

My childhood home from when my dad and mom were together was broken into, iirc they took the xbox but left the gamecube. I felt so violated that I didn't really wanna do anything that day. That experience along with an episode of a crime drama where someone got murdered by someone who just opened an unlocked door have been in the back of my mind ever since. So personally I wouldn't say that fearing a break-in is irrational at all.

If it makes you feel any better, a majority of criminals try to break in when they know no one is home. Despite how some news stories might make it sound, most criminals don't want to run into the people that live there.

Well I went years if not decades without locking the doors.
But after a certain 'Wellness' check last year...steaming from a downed tree.....I can say
I do not have an irrational fear of someone breaking into my home.
~Even the cops involved in that one knew it was a fuck up.
