It's precisely because people like him and Paul not entering that Ash isn't the strongest trainer in the world. There's bound to be so many trainers more powerful than him out there.

Winners in the standard leagues don't instantly get to challenge the champion, they get to enter an upper league and that's the one where trainers like the elite 4 would compete.

Though they haven't mentioned it outside of Cynthia's appearances in the DP and BW series.

I think that moving on without Ash will be easy. He is based of Red and most kids would be into the new games.

I think what may be important to their merchandising is Pikachu, so having Ash older and trade his pikachu to a new bright eyed trainer may be one way to solve that.

My idea for that is Pikachu is badly injured and can barely move. Ash is crying and thanks him, but tells him he doesnt have to keep fighting. Pikachu crawls over to Ashs backpack and reaches into it and pulls out something wrapped in a cloth. He unwraps it and its a Thunder Stone. We see a montage of them together throughout the entire series. It ends and Pikachu touches the stone and evolves.
