I like all the demon related plot episodes but I'm getting frustrated by all the filler and random monster of the week episodes.
Does it get more plot heavy or darker as the series goes on?

Skipping the "filler" in that show is the dumbest thing you can do. Some of the greatest episodes aren't plot related. And there are some episodes that very much do not seem plot related but then end up being so.

I tend to disagree with people here. Skipping filler is fine.

the show gets more plot heavy towards the end of this season. Season 3 is somewhat plot heavy. Nearly every episode in season 4 and 5 are plot heavy. Stop at season 5 though.

that being said, a few episodes in season 1,2 and 3 may seem not plot related but will come back in a big way. So which episodes did you skip?

Dont remember them all, everybody said to skip bugs though. Apparently it was bad. I skipped the plane one too.

Ive been rewatching the early seasons. Im a few episodes in to season 4. I skipped most of season 1 because I couldnt handle the music change. But Ive seen it before.

Its a really good show, but some of the filler episodes can be kinda dumb fun. I really like that stuff, but if it isnt your cup of tea, just do a mobile game or something with it on in the background. Or when your doing the dishes or something.

Ultimately I think the filler episodes are great because they fill out the main characters, and the more you care about them, the wilder the ride is going to be.

Stop after season 5.

"Filler" is where character development happens. This isn't a movie. I don't know when people's attention spans shortened so much but it's hurt good storytelling.

Early SN is mostly monster of the week with some plot, S3.5 or so on is the opposite, and then eventually they abandon both plot and monster of the week for unalloyed shit.

Supernatural was at its best in the early seasons when they focused more on the monster-of-the-week format. Each episode had its own different creature and lore to explore, instead of just saying "oh, it's a demon/angel again"

The creator had a story planned out for five seasons, did those five seasons, and then left. It's never outright bad, but it's almost certainly never as good as it is in those first five.

Do not listen to anyone who tells you to stop after season five. Watch some of the next season when you get there and judge it for yourself if you want to keep going or not.

Personally, season seven is my absolute favorite.

What Pegasus said. Creator outlined 5 seasons and ended his story with the season 5 finale. If you stop the final episode like 15seconds before the end, then its a complete story and one of the best endings Ive ever seen.

afterwards the show is in this constant state of do we end it or do we continue so you can see points where they were working towards an ending and then suddenly pivot into more story.

after a while the writers tend to forget lore or plot points and things start to crumble. The two leads carry it but the plot goes to shit. I dont think any of the writers or show runners after season 5 fundamentally understood the characters or the lore

This is also true. In true internet fashion, people act like the show is garbage just because it's not as good. It's a good show throughout.

I'd stay after S5, each season continues to get worse until it hits rock bottom around season 9. Then from mid season 10 onwards, it gradually pulls itself out of that pit. The final couple seasons are nearly on par with the first five imo.
