Congratulations, you just killed the restaurant industry because those servers were getting a living wage because of tips and now they can't get any better than minimum wage (which is already guaranteed by federal law).

Serving is hard work.

Theres really no problem other than to the people who bitch and moan about being expected to tip. They dont have to mind you, they just dont want to be openly viewed as the imposition that they are

It's not up to the customer to pay their wages and there is no guarantee that the employee will see anything above minimum wage even with tips. If your restaurant isn't good enough to pay your employees over $2.13(which is the current rate for tipped employees with minimum wage exemptions under the FLSA) than you shouldn't be in business anyway.

Or pay the waiters an actually good wage and forbid tips. Yes, the food will probably get marked up to offset that, but that's okay. Since with tips the food ends up being 20% above the menu price anyway.

But servers claim they hate the tipping system. They claim to be oppressed and only making $2.13 an hour. Pay them minimum wage and tell them they aren't allowed to accept tips. Problem solved.

Then they either don't know their own legal rights or aren't actually servers as servers legally must receive the prevailing minimum wage for their hours worked at the very least through a combination of tips and restaurant-paid wage, even if that means their employer must pay more than $2.13/hr to make up the difference in case tips fell short of doing so.

I find the tipping system to be BS, but I wouldn't mind it if not for how some servers act about it. I've never had any personal experience with it, but the way servers get all mafia-like passive aggressive about it when they start laying out what you should tip, shaming people on social media, & making threats about when you come back next time if you don't, is a real turnoff. If tips are basically going to be an act of coercion, they may as well just pay the servers more & raise the prices accordingly.

I knew girls in college with summer jobs who would be making a shit ton waiting tables. This brings up an uncomfortable issue with the service-based economy: if you're a good looking girl you can make absolute bank on tips. That luxury doesn't extend to others. Which is why I say this economy is far too service-based and that's the real issue here. Get rid of waiters and tip the chefs.

Tipping is just part of the bill. If the restaurant paid the full wages then the menu prices would be higher.

It's a marketing gimmick, If you want to eat out then you're paying that difference one way or the other, no sense in crying about it.
