My wifes friend is an admin at a tech company for 10 years now and they only now raised her to $18/hr. I think shes getting ripped off for someone who has been there for 10 years

She cant go somewhere that can pay her top dollar? At least find a job that pays $25-30/hr for gods sake.

Is that really the market for an admin with no college degree like her? I dont see why she cant go on Indeed or any job search site and look for the big bucks there

I'm a lowly IT tech support technician, but I make $23/hr. I don't have a college degree, either.

Admin is not my industry

I just assumed they get paid big money since office jobs pay

It's as simple as she's being lowballed or that's all the company can afford. But you knew that.

Yeah you start low and get a raise every year and every time you're re-certified. You work for the company 10 years and it's nothing.

very likely through connections and networking because getting it any other way is extremely hard

Its hard for me to think of any decent job that doesnt require connections or networking

I work from home, make 28.20 an hour, and about to possibly, depending on a meeting Wednesday, might be getting another raise. Holidays are not 1.5x pay though. They are 2x pay.

@ImAMarvel

TC is probably right in that networking and connections played a part, but I feel I need to expand upon it, because I didn't start out at my current pay.

I first got into my organization in 2011 right after graduating from the trade school I went to; they must have sent my info to a contracting firm, because I didn't apply for any of it. I was brought in for a PC refresh project at $12. After that, I was kept onboard for call center stuff with occasional project and bumped up to $14. They let me go in 2014.

However, in 2016, I emailed them to use them as a reference for another job I was about to interview for (and would have paid more than I am getting now), and I guess it was good timing, because while I didn't get that other job, my organization asked if I wanted to come back. I did, under a different contracting firm than before who bumped me up to $18, which then got to $20 not long after. Then, I moved from the call center position to a more direct deskside support role in 2018, but only just recently got my pay bumped to $23.

So yeah, while it was probably connections--especially seeing as at no point was I ever interviewed for this job--I still had to play a long game to get to the payrate that I'm at now.

Thats what one sales associate told me (I used to work with him somewhere else and ran into him there). Its probably not every state, though. My city is so expensive that its honestly nowhere close to enough to even rent a studio apartment and pay your bills. For $18/hr here, youd better be okay with roommates. Then again, it seems like almost everywhere is like this now. I think you need something like $36/hr to stay out of the red and live by yourself here, which makes things tough.

She's being low balled, but it's also doesn't require technical (and in demand skills), nor requires a degree.

I've done data entry before. It pays shit. Anyone can learn to type in data in a computer pretty fast and scan stuff. But it's monotonous and will get mostly replaced by machines

that's on the low end here, but thats CAD, so like $12.75 - $13.50 range, which i guess is extremely low.

$22.50 - $24 is actually pretty good for an admin job. They're usually $19 - 21 CAD, or, $14.50 - 16 USD
