It was still good. Had you played through all those events they narrate, game wouldve been like 120 hours long. Think I finished my first run at around 70 or so.

People talk shit about incomplete games these day and age but will make the ultimate exception for Xenogears LMAO. I've literally have never seen anyone reach as far as they can to defend a game like Xenogear fans reach to defend the 2nd disc. I hope yall's marriage will be as strong as your relationship with this shit game.

1 and 3 were both great. 2 was depressing, because the story stuff that was there was still pretty good, it was just too focused on one character and the gameplay was abysmal.

Oh I'm not defending the game. It's been 20 years I guess since I played it. It has it's pros and cons. I find the music to be enjoyable. Some of the gameplay concepts to be fun but it's ultimately bogged down by the absurd encounter rate and overly long and poorly laid out dungeons.

The story has promise and the world it attempts to build as part of the narrative structure is one you could easily envision but it does a piss poor job of explaining how it came to be in a way that it understandable or even logical. It's also over uses symbolism, gnostic themes, and jungian psychological influences in an attempt to appear deep.

So it not that I particularly like the game or have a desire to defend it, it's just that I find criticism from a dude who plays the game yearly just so he can claim to hate it and bitch about it to be laughable at best and pathetic at worse.

Its not bad. Just a few bad design flaws away from being great. Like why wasnt there more than just one battle theme throughout the game? And also no background music during dungeons wuuuuut? The mechs were utterly useless and there was not a single reason to use them.

Still it has charming character design and lets be honest, KOS MOS single handedly carries the game. Henc3 why her design for part 2 was so disappointing. One of those earlier attempts of the east trying to cater to the west and failing.

Through a translator, Takahashi explained that the Xenogears project was mostly made up of new and young staff members, which meant that the more tenured members of the team had to spend time in training them up. During the time, all projects had a two-year deadline, and with 3D graphics still new, Takahashi and the Xenogears team realized that they did not have enough time to finish the game as they had planned.
Square executives then suggested that Xenogears should end after the first disc, but Takahashi believed that such an ending would not satisfy gamers. It is a shame how that one turned out, I like Xenogears a lot but it also feels like there was a lot of stuff they could have left out. Maybe if they'd done that they would have had the time and budget to finish it.

I still like it better than most of the Final Fantasies tho

It's a lot of the characters telling you about the things you would have gotten to do if the game had another year of dev time interrupted now and again by a boss battle or dungeon

As well as the last quarter or so of the disc being standard gameplay

This is why I love Xenoblade so much, it was everything Xenogears and saga was and should have been, a gorgeous and amazing 100+ hour adventure. It was lightning in a bottle and they haven't replicated it since.

Xenogears was pretty fun initially. They really did have a good idea for a game there minus the obtuse story parts and the whole ridiculous "episode 5" thing. If they had just made one complete game instead of biting off more than they could chew, who knows.

There's a gigantic lore dump in the beginning of the game so if yall haven't played the game recently I dunno how you still love the storyline when you prolly don't understand most of it now.

Kislev: Country at war with Aveh
Aveh: Other country
Gebler: Mercenary force from Solaris
Solaris: Country that rules over the groundlings
Ethos: The church, more or less. Governs the Gears and any new tech that gets discovered.
Nisan: The holy city where Bart's holy priestess cousin lives.
Shevat: Hidden city at war with Solaris.
Cain: Fei's Id before he became Id. Can't remember his current alias.

Edit: Cain is the emperor. Completely forgot about him because of how inconsequential he was to the story.
