It's funny because society is trending toward less people smoking every year, isn't it, especially when so many modern places ban smoking in public spaces.

Think about it. In a trendy sci-fi future when diseases can be cured, smoking will no longer be hazardous to one's health. Except for when it is, because they have to portray the aging cyberpunk noir-like detective as being in shambles.

Because the author is writing what they think the future will look like. And that's usually influenced by the current times. That's why some old sci-fi movies have not aged well. What they thought the future would look like, ended up being completely off the mark.

Im Canadian and smoking is sort of part of our culture up here. Everyone grows up watching Trailer Park Boys and Letterkenny and it just goes from there.

You know how most places when you ask people why they smoke theyll say Im addicted or whatever? In Canada its always some nonsense excuse. I think my favourite Ive heard is my friend who was always really anti cigarettes after she started. Well I work at a gas station now and I get them pretty much free so I have to smoke. Like what? People be so down horrendous.

I just finished playing Prey and this is exactly it. In that game it's explained that smoking was almost eradicated until they cured cancer, at which point it became popular again

If you're in a Gritty Sci-fi, why'd they make the dangers of smoking known?
It'd only take 2 or 3 generations before they thought all the older people were lying (or exaggerating) about it's dangers.
Since big corporations will control the information narrative, they can easily bury it in that time.

"Smoke, it's good for your lungs".

There's no second hand obesity, no second hand alcoholism, second hand cocaine etc

That's what makes smoking such a dick move, it forcefully includes the rest of us sitting on the bus to partake in that disgusting cancerous tobacco smell. If it was just something sniffed or injected into their bloodstream or hell even chewed, I wouldn't hate it as much as I do
