In Part 1 the killer was actually Jason's mother

There was a chainsaw in Part 2, but Jason doesn't use it.

Scarface released the same year, prominently featuring a chainsaw in a certain scene; perhaps it was just in the zeitgheist.

Pop culture, ever since the 80s/90s, has combined Jason with Leatherfaces signature weapon in their minds. Hence the tons and tons of references to a serial killer with a chainsaw and hockey mask. Jason didnt even get his mask until the third film.

By making him a composite, you can always get copyright issues. If Jason's IP owners want to sue you, you can always claim that it's Leatherface in a hockey mask.
