God, I still have trouble processing the fact that this was an accepted feature of RPGs and MMOs at the time. WoW really did turn the MMO genre into super-casual fare, and I think that was the best possible thing that could have happened.

Actually it's just shit. A game should not punish you for playing it. Especially when the designers put things in that will definitely kill an unprepared explorer. There should be a consequence for death, I agree. WoW has it right--you die, you spend a minute or so running back to your corpse. If you die several times in a row, you have to wait for a rez timer to tick down before you can revive again.

It's establishing a consequence for death without actively making the player feel like shit. An MMO is already a massive time-sink. I think it's terrible design to deliberately erase a player's time spent leveling.

My favorite game that I'll never let myself play again. Went through a bad breakup a while back and decided to pick it up and see how different it was. I could immediately feel it draining the life force out of me because there was so much to do to get caught up.

you should feel like shit if you cant figure out that either A) i shouldn't fuckin be here, B) i need to avoid that monster or C) i need to use appropriate measures to mask my presence from the enemy

the threat of deleveling made leveling in and of itself feel like an accomplishment, it had value beyond a repetitive grind

To each their own, but I will never appreciate a game that erases time I've already spent. I don't mind leveling that takes a while--I leveled five characters to 60 in WoW Classic in 2019, not even counting the two I got to 60 during its original release in the mid 2000s.

But a game that erases time I have spent playing it? Either by taking my items away, removing experience I've gained, or otherwise backtracking my progress? That shit feels like an insult to the player and is only really there to stretch out subscription time.

man i died and deleveled during wings of the goddess in a past era zone and spent like all but 2 minutes of my respawn timer trying to find a rez. my dude went to town and shouted for about half an hour that id pay 200k (a lot at the time) for a rez in the area. only person that responded was a japanese girl who spoke no english, and didnt even take my money when she rezzed me.

that shit was like 15 years ago and i still remember it. that palpable threat of death just made everything so much more worthwhile

I imagine this is a function of the same part of the brain that compels some people to climb Mount Everest and K2. I don't have that, lol. I like a bit of risk, but not when it comes at the expense of hours of real-world time.

I never played FFXI, admittedly. About how much time on average do you lose when dying?

iirc 10% of a level, but getting a raise negated most of that loss, so it wasn't a huge issue in group content
