There is "no credible pathway" to keep the rise in global temperatures below the key threshold of 1.5C, according to a bleak new UN assessment.
Scientists believe that going beyond 1.5C would see dangerous impacts for people all over the world.
The report says that since COP26 last year, governments carbon cutting plans have been "woefully inadequate".

Depressingly unsurprising.

Yeah, at the moment as a childless dude I think to myself, well this situation sucks but at least I'll have a normalish life before climate change ruins everything

Imagine being 80, having a 45 year old kid and 10 year old grandkid who might have some apocalyptic future ahead of them. Such a depressing thought

even just earlier this year people on this board were saying current levels of climate damage are fine because they believe someone will just invent some machine to reverse climate damage and thats what we should be counting on. An idea with zero evidence

renewable energy and more efficient infrastructure costs a little more than petrol and coal? Well shit, cant stop the economy guys, guess its better to keep going as is and put our faith in the mystery zoomer who will invent the Time Machine and fix our mess for us 50 years from now.

Cimate change will happen in spite of us trying to control it. Not 25.000 years ago, The Netherlands (where I live) was ice. Was it humanity's fault all that ice melted then?

The earth is in a constant state of change. Sure we should try and not fuck it up, but the world will continue with or without us. If there is gonna be another ice age, we'll be shit out of luck, since we can do nothing to change that.

If you aren't going to make our society zero-carbon, then we need to move it off-earth.

It seems like that'd be more politically acceptable, considering how half of America has made climate change denialism into part of their religion.

It's the climate "skeptics" favourite port of call lately. Since the evidence of anthropogenic climate change is overwhelming at this point, we've arrived at "well it's happening but shucks, it's out of our hands." It's saying just enough to say something almost intelligent sounding without actually saying anything useful. It's as if that guy doesn't know that climate scientists are aware that the earth has cycles and ages, and that they just never plugged the natural causes side of things into their models.

Like this guy said on reddit famously 8 years ago:

I'm tired of looking through the nonsense that gets posted by a subset of the community on these types of posts. It's extremely predictable. Ten years ago, you were telling us that the climate wasn't changing. Five years ago, you were telling us that climate change wasn't anthropogenic in origin. Now, you're telling us that anthropogenic climate change might be real, but it's certainly not a bad thing. I'm pretty sure that five years from now you'll be admitting it's a bad thing, but saying that you have no obligation to mitigate the effects.

Aaaand here we are.
