Are the same people to argue against investments towards better public transportation and more walkable cities.

Curious.

I've lived in both places with great public transportation (New York) and places that required a car to get around (Texas).

Public transportation is better for the environment, promotes greater social interaction and removes a significant economic obstacle for lower income individuals who cannot afford to purchase/maintain/fuel a personal vehicle but nonetheless need to work.

It also eliminates the need for stroads, which everybody agrees are ugly as shit and dangerous.

wtf is "promoting greater social interaction", that's not an economical plus (you were talking about gas)

Again, you're talking about low-income people not being able to afford cars, so they use busses. Yes, these people wouldn't be able to afford to drive right now due to inflation. But my truck runs on biodiesel too, so I don't understand your point. If I can afford the vehicle, the gas shouldn't be an issue.

When did I say it was an economic plus? It's certainly a benefit though.

Some people buy a vehicle because they have no other choice if they want to stay employed, and then have chunks of their monthly income eaten by rising gas prices.

Nobody is saying we have to take cars away entirely. Just that there should be viable options for getting around in case you can't afford a car or don't want to drive for whatever reason.

All trains go through "rough neighborhoods" because those neighborhoods also house citizens trying to pay rent and make ends meet. Doesn't stop the scum from boarding your train though along with them, doesn't it?

You know what's funny? I've never had a problem affording gas for my truck! Nor have I whined about it!

Keep enjoying your commute home while stepping on vomit, asking people to move so you can sit, loud noisy people talking, plus everything else that happens regularly on public transport.

You're probably as likely to end up in a potentially fatal car accident on your way to work or the grocery store as you are to get mugged on the train, honestly.

Car-centric city design forces a lot of dangerous, stupid people onto the road. Both me and my girlfriend have been in dangerous car wrecks that weren't our fault where our cars got totaled and the shitty part was our jobs were only 10 minutes away from where we live. Meanwhile, can't say I've been mugged once living in New York

Facts: I've never been in an automobile accident nor have I been pulled over. I'm 37 years old and my driver's record is immaculate. I pay a total of $126 for 6 months of insurance. You cannot convince me to take a bus or train.

Fuel costs affect everything, even those who don't drive. The trucks that bring your tendies to Zaxby's don't run on sunshine and rainbows.

Also ask anyone with natural gas for heat this winter.

Progressives really doing the "everything is fine" meme thing for the midterms despite poor folks not being able to eat or heat their houses due to inflation. It is really fucking annoying.

Fuel costs are largely determined by supply and demand.

Demand goes down when people are less reliant on a resource. Pretty basic economics. Notice how gas prices weren't a problem when everybody was stuck at home.

this is evident in nyc, where the cost of gas here in manhattan is like $2 lower than that in california, despite the city being equally expensive to live in otherwise

That's why "walkable cities" was also mentioned in the OP

The idea is that neighborhoods are actually built to be communities where the things people need or would want to go to are within a safe walking distance away versus having these weird isolated pockets of suburbia where you have to get in your car and drive 3-5 minutes down the street to the nearest corner store because the stroads are so pedestrian-unfriendly.

Yes, which only affects people living in large cities. The point is that you're not going to find people living in smaller towns or less populated areas, which seems to account for most of the population, particularly caring about the issue when it doesn't directly impact them in any major way. Basically, we can improve things, but the initial premise of the topic is flawed unless you're specifically talking about a demographic that would be massively impacted by such improvements.
