You realize that symbols have been co-opted by white supremacists throughout all of modern history, right? And even something as innocuous as a number or hand gesture can evolve to mean something bigoted in a given space or context, right?

By that logic pretty much anything any racist has ever expressed can be a racist symbol, and very little would remain that isn't considered racist. If we choose to behave like that, we're effectively allowing racists to dictate what symbols/gestures are racist.

My point is I'm refusing to acknowledge that stuff like the number 93 or the ok-sign are inherently racist, and I feel sorry for those who allowed themselves to be tricked into thinking that they are.

Language indeed evolves, over the course of many years. But these situations don't qualify as they have simply been mentioned and popularized in some specific social media circle (and thus relatively recently). That does not make these phrases objectively racist in meaning, let alone that they 'evolved' like that.

This is just a bunch of racists trying to troll us, and probably a few trolls spreading it around as well merely because they think it's 'awesome' and 'hilarious' to do so.
It's really not that complicated.

I figured someone would bring that one up, even if it is like comparing firecrackers to firebombs. The swastika was/is used by and associated with an ideology that proudly waved its symbol around while killing millions of people, with ethnicity being a prime motivation to do so. That's on a slightly different scale than something like, say, the ok-sign.

But yeah, with that context in mind the swastika is a racist symbol.

Well, unless it's happening on a systemic level, I don't think a one-off should be taken to mean much. Now if a string of (racially motivated) mass murders happen and they all are arrested and do the ok-sign at points of their trials then, yes, it should be taken more seriously.

Everybody just seems so willing to give racists and undesirable elements of society control over whatever they latch on to, without fighting them tooth and nail. By acknowledging them trying to seize control of something, you're giving their claims legitimacy.

It's like if the entire world started acknowledging the Donbas as part of Russia now. It would wholly legitimize Russia's sham referendum.

Imagine group of bikers called the Baby Skull Gang rides around shooting babies, and they all wear baby doll heads as necklaces. One day, you're in Walmart or Starbucks or Home Depot and see a loud aggressive guy with a baby doll necklace. Why do you think he's wearing that necklace.

If a bunch of racist people say, "This sign means we're racist." Then you see someone who you suspect might be racist making that sign, do you not see the connection?

You can still go outside and make the OK sign, no one sane will stop you. I don't know basketball, but if Markieff Morris is your favorite player you can wear an 88 jersey. The swastika is still used, mainly in Asian religions. They're not "objectively racist," as that other poster keeps whining, there's practically no such thing. You need to apply context to the situation. Recognizing that insular groups have in-signs between them isn't some revelation. Stonemasons have their handshakes, gangs have hand signs and colors, religious groups have tons of tells even among smaller sects. Noting their existence doesn't give these groups power, nor does it give them sole proprietorship over them. There's a big difference between a skin head drawing a swastika on a synagogue and a life-long Hindu using it in a wedding. There's a big difference between telling you're friend you're OK to get some more beers and Proud Boys flashing it in a BLM protest. Ignoring the tell doesn't somehow stop these assholes from being racist.

The way I read some posters on here is that if you use the OK sign at all, you're a racist piece of shit that deserves to be socially ostracized. There's usually very little nuance in regards to applying context. So in the context of labeling everyone X because they use one symbol, it gives way too much power to said people trying to make those banal symbols used for racially motivated or other unsavory reasons.

I don't know the context behind 88 being controversial. And my understanding of the Swastika is the Nazi Swastika is backwards in facing compared to the historical swastika, so as long as you're not popping off instantly, you can still distinguish between a Neo-Nazi/Nazi spray painting one or using one and innocent uses of the historical swastika.

It's more when I see CE freaking out about something of this nature, I anticipate people on CE to be total asshats about it and use anything of said nature against each other, in an attempt to discredit a situation or derail the topic.
