I dont understand anything other than first cousin. Even 2nd cousins have always been confusing to me.

Who even cares about something like this besides for in depth geneaology purposes? Unless they want to sac their cousin... which is super disturbing.

1st cousin once removed: one's grandparent is their great-grandparent
2nd cousin: share the same great-grandparent(s)
2nd cousin once removed: one's great-grandparent is their great-great-grandparent

So your grandfather's first cousin once removed means that your great-great-grandparent is Chuck Howley's great-grandparent, so he would be your 2nd cousin once removed

It depends on which direction Howley is "removed" from OP's grandfather. A 1st cousin once removed could either be your 1st cousin's child, or your parent's 1st cousin.

What you're describing is if Howley is OP's grandfather's 1st cousin's child.
If Howley is OP's grandfather's parent's 1st cousin - so OP's 3rd great-grandparent is just Howley's grandparent - then he'd be OP's 1st cousin thrice removed.
