I wanna play competitive but I only have enough to play Standard(and even not very well there) and competitive standard is about the most expensive mainstream gaming hobby that exists

I adored the Duels Of The Planewalkers games from 2012-2015. It was the best gateway into the game without needing to spend a fuck ton of money on digital cards. I tried Arena for an hour and just couldn't be bothered.

Yeah I originally learned how to play magic through trial and error with a similar program in the late 90s/early 00s lol.

It really is. Even though I prefer Magic over Yugioh (and I think Magic is just a better designed game than Yugioh) at least with the yugioh arena game that game gives you a shit ton of stuff to start with and so making a competitive deck in that game is much easier than in Magic arena where it follows Hearthstone's model of barely giving you shit.

Compare it to Legends of Runeterra where it's ridiculously easy to get everything free. I could probably stop playing that for a year, come back, and have enough resources to get all cards I missed

It's not as bad once you get a decent supply of Wildcards.

I stick with budget standard like mono red burn and mono blue tempo.

I play comp with cheap gimmick decks all the time and do fine. You don't need the best of the best to compete.
