"Sometimes these dollars they go to projects having little or nothing to do with the public good. Think like (mocking face) fruit fly research in Paris France. (Audience laughs). I kid you not!"

It has everything. Cuts to government projects. Mocking the academic elite. Having no idea what the research is or what it's for. Being objectively wrong but being so convinced about it anyway. Convincing Americans that the scientific endeavour is for goobers.

It's strange to think that Palin used to considered one of the dumbest politicians in the GOP, now she'd probably be considered one of the smartest since all the others have just become so incredibly fucking stupid.

If she was in any position of power she would be right there with them.

Republicans basically take the absolute worst case scenario of something potentially being abused or misused and use it as justification to shut it down entirely.

Doesn't matter if this scenario is extremely unlikely to happen and it doesn't matter if there's a million more cases where that "something" can prove beneficial to the country's socioeconomic well-being. If there's even a <1% chance of something bad happening under a certain law, policy or initiative, then it's reason enough to not support it.

In this case, the USDA has a lab in France specifically to study pest control. Fruit fly infestation is a huge problem, so money well spent.
