Pretty impulsive but I have the money and the PTO.

I don't really have any sort of itinerary, I guess I'll figure that out in the next couple weeks. Anyone have any recommendations on must-see things? I've been to Japan before but it was back in 2007 and I stayed in the Kansai region the whole time.

Just remember, if you speak English in a loud voice at a slightly slower-than-normal pace, everyone there will be able to understand you just fine.

Oh, and Ill be there a week.

I am sure I will. Even with no itinerary I think I will enjoy just being there and doing whatever.

I can read Japanese pretty well. Not great at listening (though I would say Im OK at it) and have never tried speaking.

Nice. I'm going later this year as well. I'm not sure how much has changed since the pandemic started but Toyosu Fish Market is nice and has some of the best seafood you can get in Tokyo. Maybe try visiting an onsen as well if you go outside the city.

If the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building's observation deck is opened up post-COVID, do that at night. I was surprised that I went when seeing the sprawling sea of humanity and accomplishment of electrical engineering. It's free, unlike the Tokyo Tower, and has a better view of the city.

I also marveled at the Discharge Channel in Kasukabe. It's about an hour from Greater Tokyo by train, but it's such a phenomenal piece of human ingenuity. It's so vital to human survival that it is rightfully and unironically characterized as a shrine. Plus, the entrance to it is a tiny little door than opens up to the massive cavern beneath, like a Zelda dungeon.
