It's basically a variant of Port Royal that uses before/after for XESS with Ultra Quality (which imo actually looks better than native resolution) and I got a 35% uplift in performance.

That's amazing for a DLSS alternative that works on all cards.

Balanced (which still looks basically normal)

Performance (looked about the same as Balanced)

That's legitimately amazing

Have you tried it inside an actual game, instead of a canned Benchmark?

I don't have any games that support XeSS except for Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I'd have to re-download it, though.
Got it for free on the Epic Games Store ages ago. I'll re-download it I guess. I've never actually played it (just used it for benchmarks)

Sounds like a good game for you to test XeSS on =D

You should know it well enough by this point given how old it is.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider with everything (and RT) maxed out still runs well over 60fps so I may run into CPU limitations instead. CPU-limited games generally aren't great on laptops, sadly.

Doubly so for AMD laptop CPUs, which have great power efficiency but fall pretty far behind Intel in gaming.

Lift up the bottom of your Laptop and have a small blower fan shunt air into the cooling vents.

Plenty of LapTop coolers already exist that does that already.

Oh I don't have issues with thermal throttling. The issue is that AMD itself has very conservative power limits on Ryzen 5000 mobile chips. The performance per watt is vastly better than Intel chips, but at the expense of lower peak performance.

In fact, Lenovo Legion AMD laptops literally don't throttle. GPU or CPU. Hell, I overclocked my GPU by over 100 MHz and still had zero thermal throttling.

Then AMD prioritized Energy Efficiency & Battery Life over RAW power.

Something that is normally the realm of a DeskTop CPU.

Have you tried comparing your performance on battery with a Intel CPU on battery?

See how much actual work can get done by both?

My last Intel laptop was an i7-9750h, so almost three generations behind this. Wouldn't be much of a fair fight.

Canned benchmarks are usually much harder to run than games.

To be fair, half the reason standardized benchmarks aren't "perfect" is because every game has different performance gains for NVIDIA and AMD. A perfect example is Borderlands 3, which disproportionately favors AMD. Conversely, NVIDIA absolutely stomps AMD in Control with RT.

But you don't get to control Canned Benchmarks.

You just press run and wait for a result after the pretty pictures go by.

When you control a game, alot more issues, artifacts, & bugs come up.

The only time this would really matter is on crashing issues which is something I've only seen once. I think it was BL2 crashed during the respawn tunnel animation if you had PhysX enabled.

That's up to the Developers and how they decide to code.

Some might favor AMD, some might favor nVIDIA, some might be neutral.

Both AMD & nVIDIA are paying Developers to curry favor with their platform.

Why else do you think AMD wanted to be the sole Console Platform Provider for Sony & MS.

They gained ALOT of knowledge as to what Game Developers want.

Where as nVIDIA has burned bridges with nearly everybody they've worked with.

nVIDIA + Apple = BumpGate where the falling out happened and Steve Jobs vowed to Black-List nVIDIA from Apple's eco system from then on.

nVIDIA + MS = OG Xbox, after nVIDIA wouldn't help MS shrink the die on the OG Xbox, they were kicked to the curb and Xbox has stuck with AMD since then.

nVIDIA + Sony = PS3, after that generation, Sony stuck with AMD since PS4 -> PS5. All hints to future PS consoles using AMD.

nVIDIA + Nintendo = Nintendo was desperate for a gimmick, nVIDIA Shield offered seamless DeskTop & Portable gaming in one platform. Nintendo bought the unsold Tegra's for cheap & the Nintendo Switch was born.
We'll see if Nintendo sticks with nVIDIA after the Switches generation ends and Nintendo needs a brand new gimmick.

I am suspecting that Nintendo will probably go with SD8+ for the next console.

On top of Nvidia burning bridges they've also started losing partners like EVGA.

Nintendo actually has a longer relationship with AMD than Sony or Microsoft - they used ATi chips in the Gamecube, Wii and Wii U (after they were purchased by AMD).

The absolute worst thing about NVIDIA is that they make excellent products. There's no reason for them to be such colossal dicks to third parties and game console manufacturers. It literally costs them business.

It's not like the PC gaming business is a vast empire compared to consoles.

I know, but they decided to "Have a fling" with nVIDIA.

We'll see if life with the "Green Team" is better than a normal relationship with the "Red Team".

Nintendo made their decision, so we'll see how it pans out in the long term.

That's largely a Jensen Huang issue, he founded nVIDIA, he runs it like a IRON FISTed dictator.

nVIDIA is the house that Jensen built, its the house he'll probably grow old and die in.

PC gaming is massive.

But it's not massive from the games people here talk about and care about. 77% of revenue being from in-game purchases is probably evidence enough of that.

Yeah. Aside from a few really old Android devices like eePad and Ouya, the only devices using tegra are the Nintendo Switch or made by Nvidia directly. FWIW the Nvidia shield TV is probably the best iteration of Android TV devices.
