worth playing for historic purposes? How do they stack up against classic Doom and other FPSs that came after it in the same era?

They're super basic, but IMO they're still fun. Most of the enjoyment comes from just working your way through the maze-like levels and finding your way out. The combat isn't really anything to write home about

Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein were top down stealth games. Tough but fun.

Wolfenstein 3D was an advancement from Catacomb 3D and good on its own rights. DOOM took Wolfenstein 3D and improved upon it in every way possible.
