Piper Sandler has released their 44th semi-annual Generation Z survey of 14,500 American teens which finds that 87% of American teens own an iPhone and 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone. The Piper Sandler Taking Stock With Teens survey is a semi-annual research project that gathers input from 14,500 teens with an average age of 15.8 years. Discretionary spending patterns, fashion trends, technology, and brand and media preferences are assessed through surveying a geographically diverse subset of high schools across the U.S. Since the project began in 2001, Piper Sandler has surveyed more than 233,400 teens and collected over 56.5 million data points on teen spending.

Where did they poll these 14,500 American Teens?

That seems very specific that you would get 88% iPhones when the number should be closer to 50% since that's the distribution in the US.

Central limit theory and sample sizes are a thing.

Basically a suffiently representative sample of persons can be used to measure the population at large with fairly high confidence.

You only need like 1000 people to pull this off. The key is getting a representative sample.

Depends on what is being studied, as well. A sample size of 10 can be reasonable. Many papers I read routinely make inferences of samples of 3, and that can be justified.

I remember at least in my grad stats clases they had us treat the minimum as around 30. I studied a social science and worked a lot with polling data. So I have no doubt it varies some by goal and field.

Apple just has the perfect recipe for teens. I don't see what's so unbelievable about this stat.

  • competent pictures
  • Best in class video, for Twitter/Tiktok/Shortforms
  • marketing that appeals to teens
  • popularity
  • same layout as their ipad they've been using for 10 years.

And don't forget the marketing to parents about what they can see/control with their kids' phones.

And it isn't even just "same layout" as the iPad, if you have both they're essentially just extensions of each other.

If iphones did not have a closed ecosystem they might even have more people using them. I was actually considering getting a iphone since they Apple makes good hardware.

The closed ecoystem is just terrible. For example, you have to deal with shit such as Firefox on Apple systems not really being Firefox so therefore you can't use ublock origin to block virtually all ads. I really don't want to browse the Internet on my phone with the modern cesspool of ads.

14,500 people sampled for a country the size of the United States is an insane sample size. Something would have to really be messed up with the survey for it to be inaccurate.

I dunno that seems like a lot of parents owning iphones to give all those kids a used one. That would mean 87% of parents own or owned one.

The survey should have gone a little deeper. Like the model, new or used, etc. My parents never bought me things like that. My first cell was a prepaid flip phone. Seeing parents buy things like cars and laptops for their kids when they're not extremely well off seems foreign to me.

Kids don't give a fuck about "closed ecosystems." They just want a shiny toy that lets them talk to friends, take pictures/video, plays music, and maybe some games and that's it.
