i am moving to sydney for a job that has a salary of about $110k a year (with gradual increases over the next few years, capping at 134).

how comfortable will this be in sydney? i know its a very expensive city - im not above living in a run-of-the-mill apartment for the first couple years, and probably would prefer to as my partner and i dont want to invest in a nicer place until we know how longterm the move is gonna be.

That's a good salary. You'll be fine.

You can always head to France, for shopping if you feel like it.
It's the closest country to Sydney, Australia.

I make 50k a year and live 10 mins drive from the CBD and can afford to live alone in a smallish studio, which costs me $1400 a month

You can rent something pretty damn nice for $2000 a month. Edit just saw you have a partner, so scrap studio ideas lol. But yeah a nice 2 bedder can be secured for under $2500 a month

Cost of living is rough but a 6 figure salary is still awesome

That is great to hear, thanks!

any suggestions on where to live? ive been around the city a little bit but not enough to really know all that much. im coming from nyc, so if theres a particular spot with a more active arts/music scene thatd be ideal. ive heard both good and bad about Newtown, any advice from a resident?

I spent 8 years in Newtown til this year ha. Yeah it's certainly the arts/music hub.. I got a bit over it though myself, living just off King Street, but maybe it'd be more fun with a partner.

Summer Hill, where I am now, is kind of perfect. It's half little indie village half quiet suburbia. 10 mins drive west down Parramatta road but far enough away to be that little bit cheaper and peaceful

Glebe and Leichhardt are also really nice. And they're also closer to the Newtown vibe it you're keen on that

The nightlife here is probably gonna be disappointing compared to NYC heh. But yeah you're looking at Newtown or King's Cross with that sort of stuff. You'd probably be able to get a decent apartment there.

If you're willing to go a little further out you'd be able to rent a house. Plenty of options out there depending on what you're looking for.

Thanks for the tips! Kings Cross is where I stayed when I visited.

Ill be working at the Opera House, so Id prefer close-ish to that if possible. Well probably have one car between us, but Id prefer to take public transport/bike if possible

Scratch Leichhardt then, not near a train line

Summer Hill, Stanmore are good and right on the train line

Chippendale is another option actually. Right between Glebe and Newtown, but a lot easier to get to central station. 10-15 min walk depending. A bit more expensive though

Anywhere near the inner west train line (Stanmore, Petersham) you probably won't regret

Once you're in the central city itself it's pretty easy to get around. It's all pretty linked up by a light rail or train these days.

I'm probably not the right person to ask specifically for finding an exact place. I'm out in Campbeltown with a mortgage and kids so apartment life in the city ain't for me at this stage heh. I've never stayed around the CBD itself and I grew up in Brisbane.

Probably good to look up a site like domain.com.au and see what sort of places are available for the price you're looking for.
