Arkane Studios has put speculation regarding Deathloop being part of the wider Dishonored universe, officially confirming that is indeed the case. Eagle-eyed players have found multiple hints that Deathloop is connected to Dishonored in some way, and now, developer Arkane Lyon has stated that its latest immersive sim takes place long after Dishonored 2 standalone expansion, Death of the Outsider.

Not everyone has seen the same thing [in Deathloop]. Not everyone has heard the same song that you might have heard hidden somewhere. Not everyone has seen every room, et cetera, et cetera, director Dinga Bakaba stated on The Official Xbox Podcast (via IGN). "So, it was nice to see the community peek at the little clues we did sprinkle everywhere that, yes, indeed, we envisioned Deathloop to be happening in the future after Death of the Outsider."

Bakaba added that the studio was careful to pepper in subtle connections to Dishonored, without compromising Deathloop's own unique identity. As we were making Deathloop, we said, hey, [this story] could be one of the things that could happen after [Death of the Outsider], he added.

"So, we have a certain timeline to link that and there are a lot of clues, actually, in the game. There are some that are abused, one of them is really spoiler-y, so voila, but there are a lot of small things and some that were under peoples noses all the time, but people are just figuring it out."

Examples of these clues include Deathloop's Heritage Rifle, which following the game's Goldenloop update, now has a logo on its side, clearly identifiable as Dunwall Tower from Dishonored. Hints like these are described as this little scavenger hunt inside the scavenger hunt, by Bakaba.

"We tried to see everything as an evolution, but each time they mentioned the past, either we were vague enough or we disguised in, I would say, natural ways the names," Bakaba continued. "Like, they talk about the Motherland, and not about Tyvia, but you can definitely once you know, you can unravel everything. And yes, it does make sense. So, it was nice for us to be imagining one of the futures of the Dishonored world and to have that make sense."

Anybody else find it pretty weird how despite being beloved by the media and winning some awards, absolutely nobody's acknowledged Deathloop after the first few post-launch weeks?

I do, it was an amazing experience and would be my GotY if Returnal didnt exist. It's one of those games that people complain about and I dont think their complaints are justified

That's cool. I haven't played it yet but I got it for PC this month. Arkane is pretty consistent in making great games

It was pretty obvious right when it came out. At the end of the game, you find a pistol that's just straight-up the one from Dishonored and Julianna explicitly points out that it's an antique with a whale-oil propellant.
