Young women are more likely to identify as liberal now than at any time in the past two decades, a trend that puts them squarely at odds with young men.

Forty-four percent of young women counted themselves liberal in 2021, compared to 25 percent of young men, according to Gallup Poll data analyzed by the Survey Center on American Life. The gender gap is the largest recorded in 24 years of polling. The finding culminates years of rising liberalism among women ages 18 to 29, without any increase among their male peers.

The share of men who identify as liberal has held fairly steady for almost 25 years, according to annual Gallup surveys. Roughly one-quarter of men ages 18 to 29 term themselves liberal, year after year.

Meanwhile, among young women, liberalism has exploded. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, fewer than 30 percent of women identified as liberal. The liberal camp grew through the second term of former President George W. Bush. It expanded further during the tenure of former President Obama. It reached 39 percent in 2017 with the inauguration of Trump. In the last two years, liberalism surged anew.

Young women today are much more liberal than young men, Daniel Cox wrote in a June newsletter of the Survey Center on American Life, a project of the American Enterprise Institute. His work documents a growing political rift between young women and men.

If youve been paying attention to the social trends, you probably have some inkling that boys and men are struggling, in the U.S. and across the globe.

They are struggling in the classroom. American girls are 14 percentage points more likely to be school ready than boys at age 5, controlling for parental characteristics. By high school, two-thirds of the students in the top 10 percent of the class, ranked by G.P.A., are girls, while roughly two-thirds of the students at the lowest decile are boys. In 2020, at the 16 top American law schools, not a single one of the flagship law reviews had a man as editor in chief.

Men are struggling in the workplace. One in three American men with only a high school diploma 10 million men is now out of the labor force. The biggest drop in employment is among young men aged 25 to 34. Men who entered the work force in 1983 will earn about 10 percent less in real terms in their lifetimes than those who started a generation earlier. Over the same period, womens lifetime earnings have increased 33 percent. Pretty much all of the income gains that middle-class American families have enjoyed since 1970 are because of increases in womens earnings.

Men are also struggling physically. Men account for close to three out of every four deaths of despair suicide and drug overdoses. For every 100 middle-aged women who died of Covid up to mid-September 2021, there were 184 middle-aged men who died.

I learned a lot I didnt know. First, boys are much more hindered by challenging environments than girls. Girls in poor neighborhoods and unstable families may be able to climb their way out. Boys are less likely to do so. In Canada, boys born into the poorest households are twice as likely to remain poor as their female counterparts. In American schools, boys academic performance is more influenced by family background than girls performance. Boys raised by single parents have lower rates of college enrollment than girls raised by single parents.

Many men just seem less ambitious. College women are roughly twice as likely to enroll in study abroad programs as college men. In 2020, amid Covid, the decline in college enrollment for male students was seven times that of female students. As Reeves puts it: It is not that men have fewer opportunities. It is that they are not taking them.

More men are leading haphazard and lonely lives. Roughly 15 percent of men say they have no close friends, up from 3 percent in 1990. One in five fathers doesnt live with his children. In 2014, more young men were living with their parents than with a wife or partner. Apparently even many who are married are not ideal mates. Wives are twice as likely to initiate divorces as husbands.

Joel Mittleman, a University of Notre Dame sociologist and the papers sole author, found that on an array of academic measures, gay males outperform all other groups on average, across all major racial groups. Conversely, he concluded that lesbians perform more poorly in school overall and that Black gay women have a much lower college graduation rate than their white counterparts.

In recent years, academics, lawmakers and journalists alike have sounded an increasingly urgent alarm that on balance, American males are stuck in a scholastic funk. As the economic gap between those with and without a college degree has widened, womens college graduation rate has risen in tandem, but mens rate has remained largely stagnant for decades. Today, women comprise 59.2 percent of college students, according to the National Student Clearinghouse.

Mittlemans research indicates that this characterization of the educational gender gap is critically lacking in specificity. It is, in fact, straight males who tend to be mired in a scholastic morass. And the considerable academic progress that young women have charted since the advent of second-wave feminism has been largely restricted to the heterosexuals among them.

The three surveys of American adults consistently indicated that gay men are far more likely than straight men to have graduated from high school or college, with just over half of gay men having earned a college degree, compared with about 35 percent of straight men. I was liberal when I was younger. Voted for Obama both times. But the party pushed me out. Made it clear I wasn't welcome. So here we are.

The world has trended away from tradition and I've been left behind. I can't align myself with a party that hates me.

You see what's really happening is the system of privilege that's been in place since all human history is starting to come undone and we have men, mostly white & straight, of today being the first to not experience the full effect of that privilege.

So really the topic should be titled "men finally experiencing small taste of what women have endured for 60,000 years."

They're depressed and failing, turning to an ideology telling them it isn't their fault its' the immigrants/feminists/communists/CRT/LGBTQ/etc... while the other side is saying that, actually, it's their fault that all these other people are oppressed and they are in fact privileged. It's obvious why that part is happening, what needs to be examined is why a generation of straight men is depressed af and failing at life in the first place not why they're flocking to an ideology that panders directly to their fears

But yeah, when one side tells you all your problems are the fault of somebody else... it's a tried and true method for getting people to join your group.

Why so many people are struggling... there's likely no single answer, but the cost of existing is just too damn high.

Once upon a time, you could get a job stocking shelves and make enough money to buy a house.

Now you need 2-3 jobs to pay rent (Which is going to increase next month because fuck you). Many people are in debt because they were told college was the only pathway to success, and we're a generation facing the very real possibility of never being able to retire.

All they have to do is go back to school and actually educate themselves. The world is evolving. Technology, healthcare, and many other things have, and are still advancing. People who don't understand it will be left behind, like old people are when it comes to the phones. They don't understand their smartphones too much, so they are lagging behind the younger ones who do.

If they don't actively seek to better themselves, then they'll fail. There's many straight white male successful people. Many born into wealth, but many who actually went to school for law or something and made themselves successful. You can't just gain success playing games all day long and condemning others.

But that's the reality. Minorities know they aren't going to be given benefits in society and need to actually work to get somewhere. These straight white men feel it should be given to them. When all minorities are working to get there and they realize it, they get pissed because they are the 'superior' class.... 'why are my doctors Indian? ..... Why is the nurse a lesbian?' ...... because if they knew from history that if they don't succeed, they don't have a cushion. They weren't fooled by this oasis of straight white male privilege.

What happened in the democratic party that made you feel unwelcome and your only solace was to run to the opposing party?

So it seems like men aren't actually getting more conservative. These quotes imply young men's political views have been stable while young women are becoming more liberal.

This in itself is a privileged statement. Access to education is borderline nonexistent for millions of Americans, and the level of education they could almost afford grants them a degree that most employers won't take seriously anyway.

Well, the issue is a catch 22, as these same people keep voting on elected officials trying to keep them out of school by killing loan forgiveness, killing school aid in general, and killing types of lessons people could CHOOSE to enroll in.

Well yes, conservatism is incredibly coddling to emotionally stunted men, so I can see why it would be an attractive option to men who cannot succeed in the modern world.

"Go back to school" works in countries that don't have a joke of an education system.

Unfortunately, living in America means you pay out the ass for higher education. Because why would we invest in our citizens?
