DC residents have been fighting for decades for it to become a state, because right now, they have no representation in the U.S. government and thus no say in how things are run, despite still being taxed by the government. DC is also extremely-Democratic and would provide a massive boon to Democrats especially in the Senate; as such, Republicans have consistently opposed DC becoming a state and almost-unanimously vote against it when it's brought up for a vote. Their solution is for most of the land making up DC to be returned to Maryland, and have the former-DC residents vote in Maryland's elections, despite neither Maryland or DC wanting to merge back together.

yes. it's messed up that if you want to live in DC you have to necessarily concede to having no representation in government. we literally founded this nation on the ideal of "no taxation without representation".

Yes. There's really no argument against other than not wanting to add a safe Dem seat.

My attitude on this extends to Puerto Rico and any other territory that may want to become a state.

They should have representation, but I don't like making a city a state. Just have them vote on rejoining MD.

Except neither DC nor Maryland want that, so that's a non-starter solution that woudl require more effort than DC statehood.

I don't give a fuck what they want. It's about what's right rather than what's convenient. Maryland ceded the land, they can take it back just like Virginia did their portion.

And the right thing is having them vote on what they want, which is for DC to become its own state.

The video I watched on the subject mentioned this as well. DC has more people living in it than a number of other states which all of course have representation in Washington.

Convenient that you brought up this subject when a video was posted about this very topic.

Anyway, as a DC resident it should happen. We have a large population size, we should have representation in congress and not have federal decide everything for us. We should be able to regulate or own taxes. Virginia bitching about the land they took back was stupid all because they wanted to keep slaves. They were cool with it to begin with and should've stayed that way

I think, while areas like the white house and such should still be separated from states and considered Washington D.C., the rest should go back to Maryland.

Capitol is supposed to be a separate federal district. As far as congressional representation, that should be folded in to Maryland to maintain the capitol's status as an allegedly neutral district.

So no free two senators, sorry.

The yellow area here would still be the federal district:

And as mentioned, neither Maryland wants to annex the land back, nor do the residents of DC want to rejoin Maryland.

Statehood is supported by the vast majority of its residents. Maryland doesn't want the land, and Virginia already took back its portion of DC two centuries ago because they wanted to keep their slaves.
